New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Beware or Not???
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:14:01 PM »
Many, many reasons why this might be.....but as a auctioneer, I'll tell you what I can.

1. sometimes folks just show up to move out and are driving a Ford Escort but the units contents requires a
small/large U-Haul to move and they don't have the money to rent one.....so stuff gets "left behind"....
even if it still has some value.....the site owner/operator puts the good/better stuff in a unit and throws the
true "junk" away.
(or not)
2. sometimes folks have a family member that has passed....they don't want any of grandmas junk...so they
(renter/site owner) work out a deal to sign over the rights in lieu of "bill collection" and the site sells the stuff
to try and recoup some funds

3. site owners are just like me & you....they have stuff they no longer want/need....put it in a empty unit and sell it

4. "showcasing"...if you had alot of stuff that was left/abandoned....that was "going" in the dumpster(every pickup cost), would you not "showcase" it first....before you payed to have it hauled away?

It seems like most bidders think the storage place is "always" trying to "get one over" on the bidders....which
in the grand scheme of things is just not the case.

Isn't the statement I put in red above essentially what you were saying in your points 1-4? (at least to some degree)
And anytime the word "always" is used, that's a red flag in itself. Seldom (if ever) does something take place in an "always" way....that is called a "glittering generality" but if any of your points 1-4 happen, it is something that is not a true LIEN situation and IMHO to be watched for.

Friday, August 12, 2011...

Went to 2 of 4 auctions today by the same auctioneer; here;s the count:

"Bidders".......60; 5 regulars, 55 newbies.

Lkrs.....8 at each location; nothing special. I didn't bid on one due to quality and prices; a couple I would have bid on and won 7 months ago....today prices were double what I would pay.

Here's a pic of the crowd; some are still coming out of hallway door to the left out of frame.

Here are 3 pics of a pretty nice lkr with an "older" look; this one sold for $1,100 and plenty of us would have paid $500 or so for it.

Maybe next time? Getting a little discouraged !

So, one of the producers of Storage Wars left a message on my voice mail Friday afternoon. Hmmm, I wonder what that could be about.  ::)

So, it's been two weeks now, what was the nature of the call ?

I'll tell you what, I can give a rat's arse what established bidders think of me.  So I didnt have the cash or space to get into this pre-storage wars, so what!  Everyone was new at one time or another, don't like it, tough luck!

Hey monkey business, I see you have the same rule of thumb I have, shoot for doubling your money not striking it rich! LOL  Yes, I do realize that most units will never pull in $5K like the shows like to lead you to believe!

Well, I think we all have to think about what other bidders think of us. A show of strength is certainly one thing that is valuable when well used in an auction setting; veterans (as an example) often give newcomers a lesson in ecomonics. I for one don't put down newcomers for being new (per se) but when they cop an attitude one way or another they might pay for it.

Running up a "cock-sure" newcomer is the norm in my area. If they can take the loss a few times then they might deserve to continue on and join the ranks. If they're smart enough not to buy stupid they might deserve to continue on and join the ranks, otherwise there are plenty of "wanna-be's" they can commisserate with.

There are a fair number of  folks on these threads who make a "blaze" with "failure is not an option" comments, etc, and three months later you never hear from them again. Sure, maybe they're counting their profits, but more than likely they are licking their wounds.

The lookey-loo is different than the person who wants to become a regular and make a living at buying and selling through the storage auction process. The person who throws money at a locker just to win one is making a mistake no doubt and being cautious about how one spends is a good indicator of how long one will be around to keep spending.

First episode tonight...Barry gets a cool pool cue holder from the Victorian Era.

Otherwise.....

PAY THE LADY !

****

Now for part 2:

The couple score with one of the coolest old-timey things I've seen in a long time....bird boxes....check them out!

Mark (whatever) is back spending his way to celebrity as the new guy to hate....he gets a Nintendo (NES) he claims sold for $13.5K online. Takes his to a game store....you guessed it, he gets what we would get....not much.

******

So, SW seems to be improving a bit in the realism dept with the guys getting their fair share of duds now and again.

BUT, I did buy one piece of specialized equipment from a newbie lkr buyer who didn't know what he had and I'll make 10 times the money on my $30 investment. Knowledge is a wonderful thing.

Appx 5 weeks later I sold this item for $275 on Clist. Funny thing was another seller had a similar item and had listed it 5 times (different wording) over about a 2-week period. I flagged it for overpost and THEN....MY item got deleted  and her's stayed on.

I redid mine with different wording and in a different city and got it back on. Guess the multiple listing person worked for Clist.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011...new episode in Dallas, TX.

The usual big finds.

I found one of those turbo jet engines too and sold if for the scrap metal value.  ::)

Saddles? I once got three in the garage of a whole household I bought. They went well, but were all in the $250 each area....not $2500 like the guys get.

Missed the "Industrial LA" episode last week, but getting ready to watch it now in reruns. Will come back here and post some thoughts when it's done. (Tuesday, August 9, 2011)

Hey, I know three guys who got Bobcats in the first year they were buying lkrs ! Oh wait.....that's a lie.

A foreign military helmet....gotta be a gun in there too. I guess we'll find out after the commercial.

****

I'll give the two of them credit though. In one episode I  actually heard Allen say "80% of the lkrs we get are duds."
Be nice if they actually showed them getting a dud sometime instead of hitting it big or "salting" the good lkrs with finds they got somewhere else.

Went to 3 yesterday with nothing exceptional to report. Crowd moderate (25) prices still a little high and in one case way high for contents. A 10 x 15 about 2/3 full with nothing special showing...$695. I would have paid maybe $350 to $400.

Going to 2 more today and will report on them later.

****
The 1st place today had 3 and a crowd of about 20; lks nothing to talk about. One was a 4x4x4. I bid $25 thinking I would get it but another regular went up to $50 against some newbies. I stopped at my first bid.  Second lkr was a 10 by 10 with a few things showing but not great; went for $275 to a "new" regular who had been buying everything he saw a couple of weeks ago, but must have gotten stung as he has only bid on 1 out of 10 the last couple of days. I walked away from last lkr here and didn't ask later what it sold for.

The 2nd place today had 7 or so lkrs. Crowd of about 30 with only FIVE regulars ! MANY new faces. On the other hand the first 3 sold for just $20 each. If the auctioneer had exercised the usual time-frame between waiting for bids or asking for them he would have gotten at least a bit more, but he was in a hurry. I didn't bid on a one; what's the point of buying visible junk (and nothing else) even if you do get it for $20?

General Storage Auction Talk / OMG....Now it's the Picker Sisters !
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:03:00 PM »
I know, I know, it's not an auction show, but if you can watch this (don't count the # of times the two chicks say OMG !) you can get some ideas on how to recycle some of the stuff we get in lkrs into decorator items.

OMG.....I counted 7 times in 18 minutes in the episode I watched. Lifetime on Monday nights.

They are from LA (where else?) and were in Texas in the show I saw.

OMG !  :o

But really why bid so high.

The simple answer is they are clueless. Once having bought one or two at high prices and either breaking even or losing money, perhaps they will learn.

Like in my state its in the newspaper and online telling people not to support those that buy from storage auctions. They state before you buy online ask the person if this was bought at a storage auction and if so tell them you dont support people that buy from these types of people. Its stupid and you lose out on sales because of it.

Is this a newspaper story, a newspaper editorial, a newspaper advertisement ? I would be interested in the FORM this newspaper item takes .

Online, what is the URL so we can take a look at it.    Thanks!
