New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Getting attached to items
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:16:25 PM »
Dont look at it as a profit loss, but as profit gained. Reason is because you are keeping it and it would of cost you more if you went out and bought it.

That may get yo ua grand national if its not in mint condition.  If its low mileage and or a gnx model, forget it.  That will probably fetch 7-10k.

I think it would be hard to tell if it has low mileage since technically you cant open the door or even touch the car. Hope you got good eyes to see if it high or low mileage.

Oh ya well good thing was it was all new, many were plug in, or cermaic so at the end of it all i just took it all to a party store i know well an consigned it all to them. It was recent too so pretty close to holloween.

Thats a good thing then :). Do you think you will recoup all your money or make a profit? I would be curious to know how well this does for you.

How much cash should you bring if you know a car is going up for auction?  Would it be impossible to win a Buick Grand Natinal for $3000 or $3500?  This is roughly half the price of a quick resale.  What is known about the car is that the owner is in Jail and wont be claiming the car before auction.

I want this car but don't want to not have enough cash.

Cars are funny, I seen a jeep wrangler sell for $350, then saw a chevy caprice sell for $2500. So it really can range depending on car and the people there that are interested in it. Best thing to do, is look up the blue book value of it. If you are purchasing it for yourself, then bring the blue book value of it. If buying it to resell or part out then bring enough cash that would be no more than 3/4 of the value.

i was surprised by alot of the stuff i sold alot of the name brand clothing and nicer items didn't sell but i was selling old worn pairs of cotton gym shorts for a quarter, really wierd the stuff people buy.

i did have some opportunity for future business though, lots of people left me phone numbers and said if i find records or cd's to contact tehm, one guy wanted old building materials mantels, bricks, subway tiles, old fauceuts, etc, so in addition to the little bit of money i made got some future contacts.

Well I didnt get any future customers out of the ordeal. But I did manage to meet someone who will be giving alot of stuff away. Hope he calls soon.

Lol, did better than me. A partner of mine and myself set up shop at a parking lot. He made $40 selling bikes, and I made $12 selling other stuff. We were there from 9am - 5pm. Was planning on having a yard sale today at my house just to clear out my inventory, but had some stuff come up. So next weekend I am going to set up at my house instead.

Sports collector memorabilia - end up selling it for a lot less than I felt I should of gotten.

Record collection with some very hard to find rare records - Still holding on to them, keep getting really low offers.

A Ham radio unit is my dream unit, though I might keep too much stuff to make money off of it.  Being a ham myself I know the gear and where to sell it.  So far I've seen a few old CB radios, which are next to worthless, but no ham stuff.

Oh, and yeah, I'd go for a tote unit if it were cheap.

I like lockers with totes in them. However I usually put a low max on them. Totes I can always use, but I have found out most tf the time its a bunch of personal and clothes.

The only thing I am really liking about the site at the moment is that they have all the storage facilities addresses and phone numbers. I doubt they will ever have a  majority of the auction listings because of how much they charge. But at least a pre compiled list of all the facilities are already there at mouse click.

Craftsman toolbox mostly craftsman tools impact gun with impact sockets some specialty tools. I figured it new to be between 700-900 dollars and only asking 250 now completely cleaned up lookin like new box could easily go for 150 itself. Tools easily get another 100 just for craftsman and another 150 for the rest in a perfevt world hehe. But will put a few hours into it and see how it goes.

Well given that, they are already getting the tools at a steal. Keep listing them as they are, or better yet, list them for $300, that way they can feel good about themselves when they haggle you donw $50 on already a great steal.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Bought my first units!
« on: August 26, 2011, 10:34:38 PM »
I went to my second auction today, there was only 8 people there, unlike my first one, where there was 80 people. I got two units, one for $5, turns out it had about $20 worth of stuff. The second unit I got for $45. I could see a tv, a nice dvd player, and what looked like pottery partially buried under some clothes. The dvd player turned out to be a really nice one, the tv was very broken, and the pottery was an urn full of ashes, (which I left with the office)!

Luckily, underneath the clothes, I found about 20 dvd's and about a dozen records, Disney collectibles, and then a bunch of other goodies. After researching online, I think I can make $150 to $200; not bad for my first units I guess.  ;D

Actually that is not bad at all. You more than doubled your money. And that is what your goal should be with every unit. Double your money.

Word of caution on TVs. Most tvs, even in good working condition, will not bring you in much money. Unless its a good size flat or plasma screen. But again word of caution, flat and plasma screens do act up funny after some time in a storage locker. I rarely take into consideration of any value when I see a TV. Just my personal opinion. Some may tell you otherwise.

Well today this guy came and looked at the craftsman tool box with tools galore. He offered me 100 less than I wanted cause the box has some rough spots on it. Forget that its only listed at 250. He said that hes buying it for some lady that is a hobbiest and she is putting it in her front room so it has to look really good. So I figured I would completely restore the box by sandblasting the whole thing use my body repair kit and get rid of all the dents paint it all black with my air painter clean all the tools making them shiny and.putting new padding in the drawers then raising the price to 400... Should I or should I just leave it as I got it and hope for the best? It would only take time and a few dollars as I only need paint and padding. Any input from anyone would be great as ive already lowered prices for the weekend and flea market is on monday morning where I hope to be selling all my things.

Good idea acman with the keywords I will try adding more and see if that works.

This really depends on the kind of tool box, the condition it is in now, and the amount of tools, brand and quality of tools that are in the box. You will always find people that will come and then offer you quite a bit less. And its not always worth trying to restore something. So first do the research and see what the value is for the box irtself brand new, cut the price in half. Add up the value of the tools. If power tools cut it in half, hand tools take two thirds of the price off, and air tools take only one third off. Add all this up. then add to it, for wiggle room when people want to haggle the price.

Keep in mind, alot of professionals are not really buying tools like they use to.

One of the tricks I use on CL is inflating my price sometimes when I know I have a strong chance on getting talked down(just sold some rims and tires and got talked down $50 on a quick sale),and I also bundle items.  Say I have an old NES, Old Sega, and a boat anchor computer, I will bundle items to garner more interest.

Also, use the Keyword BS everyone uses.  Learning alot from people who do good sales on Cl and they do the best when you keyword your post.  Like if your selling a used laptop try keyword like DVD player, Itunes, Microsoft, Vista, and so on and so forth.  This way you you have expanded your search area from just plain jane computer to like 30 or 40 different words that will be seen in a search.

mmm, maybe I should try the keywords out. Great tip.
