General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Approached by a Domain Broker
« on: December 22, 2013, 06:34:13 PM »
Yeah, there are aspects of this business that are slowing. Fewer people at the auctions, fewer people searching for auctions, fewer people subscribing to auction lists, fewer people reading forums. Traffic numbers are much lower than they were a year ago but the numbers are still decent enough to make the niche lucrative for the sites that are already established. The virtual storage auction niche is still on the upswing.

Yep, there's nowhere to go but up despite the first five points you made in the quote above.  Optimism is a wonderful thing.

Thanks for correcting my spelling, I knew you were good for something.  ;)

And I knew there would finally come a point when you could acknowledge that storage auctions and everything associated with them were on a downhill run toward the bottom of their popularity.

I let him know that this was a dieing niche........

This is an admission worthy of note. Not because "dying" is spelled incorrectly, but because of the source of the statement.

Even when I was buying 4 lockers or more a month (before the tv shows) I didn't get that much gold or silver in the ones I bought, but other people seemed to get a fair amount (unless of course they were lying).

What has been your experience (especially in the last two years)?

USPS is kinda vague on what types of books can be sent using media mail..

I read their requirements a month or two ago and one of the things I got from it was that there was to be no advertising in the media sent. This would exclude magazines, but one person on the eBay forums indicated that many CDs, DVDs, etc contained advertising and what was the difference.

I often buy specialty hobby interest magazines for selling on eBay and most of the time they are older (maybe from the 70s, etc.  SURE, they have advertising in them, but it's 40 years OLD !  I for one enjoy seeing the old ads and depending on the mag's subject matter it gives me some insight into the prices of items advertised.

ANYWAY, a set of encylopedias would be no problem...the weight issue is of course the main thing. I suggest putting it in one way via usps and then when it comes time to actually ship it (if eBay) you will have the choice at shipping time to look at the prices for sending it any usps method possible. Could be a couple of flat rate boxes would be cheaper than media mail (that or parcel post).

So with the jackpot topping $636 million tonight I figured I ask...what would you do if you won?

I would quit picking.

What about a hand-truck from uhaul?  It had been painted, but the orange is showing.

Take a look at this cList ad from northern California. It has both an appliance dolly AND a platform dolly...both orange.

This was on 12/15/2013 so may be gone when you take a look after Dec.

I've known people who have ground down the letters in the loading base, and orange IS a popular color.
A heat-gun takes off the vinyl instructions.

U-Haul used to give a $25 credit (for buying packing tape, locks, boxes, etc). Don't know what their policy is now.

An appliance dolly of that type typically brings $65 to $75 when advertised on Craigslist and using a picture of a similar item with a different color.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Dumpster Diving
« on: December 15, 2013, 01:07:30 AM »
Picking dumpsters to "dive" is like picking an auction to go to or a locker to bid on.

If one is looking for boxes for shipping eBay items, the following are good choices in my area:

1) Shoe stores (shoe boxes come 8 to 12 to a larger box)

2) Tire stores (metal car wheels come in sturdy boxes and there will usually be 4 of a kind)

3) Furniture stores (good for all sizes...mirror boxes, etc)

These are just a few of the places where one can save money by NOT buying boxes in a store.
