eBay / Re: Free listing day today only~

OH I do paid and free shipping on many items.  Still have to figure out the weight, box, etc.  I just need to get off the cash and buy a new scale.  The one I had crapped out on me.  So I been using the postal scale at work.

You can also do free normal shipping, and then charge for priority mail or faster.  I've done that a time or two before.  I get sales both ways so not sure which one is better.

You got his address?  I'll ship him a gaylord box of records.  Between myself and 2 buddies I'm sure we could fill one up.

Is why I like my 50 free auction/buy-it-now listings I get each month.  Have yet to go over that 50 but gotten close a few times.  Mostly with re-list.  Sold 3 things earlier this week and have 6 things listed now.  No buyers/bids yet for these things but no biggie.  Will just re-list in 3 days.

Put the 7.25 size 10k anniversary band ring I found up for sale.  Many lookers and 4 watchers but no bites yet.  Have a bunch of cloths to put up.  Just can't decide if want to do it as "lots" or individual.  Figuring out shipping is a PITA on that stuff when in lots since I do free shipping.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: caravan (kinda) today
« on: March 15, 2012, 07:18:29 AM »
Sounds like a $3k or higher unit.  I wouldn't of gotten it either as I normally don't carry more then 2k with me.  Rare for a unit to get that high in my parts.  I suspect some people were going in together.  Least I know I'd of quickly hit up my 2 buddies to see if they wanted to do that.

As for the caravan - that is about normal right now.  Out of my 7 facility one last week we only hit 4 locations.  Most of those had 1 or 2 units.  Only one location had 3 units.  Long day for little reward.

I went to metro on Bankhead and Northside drive on tues.9 units up for bid. About 60 people mostly rednecks.

1 unit went for $300 and it had some broken furniture, a matress some trashbags and a set of old and ugly 20inch rims.

1 unit went for $70 and it had some trashbags and a cheap walmart mountain bike.

1 unit went  for $650 and it had a decent looking fridge with water and ice built in the door. 2 stoves with the eyes missin and a dishwasher. All were stainless steel looking.

1 unit went for $450 and had about 7 storage totes a **** load of trash bags a couple of broken nightstands a dirty matress and boxspring , a halfway decent fold up wheelchair and a couple cheap looking lamps.

All the other units went between $30 and $150 and were basically full of stuff to scrap.

Out of the 60 plus people only about 7 actually bid, but about twenty wanted to stand in front of the unit the whole time and not make one bid. Whats up with that

Where do you find the auctions with the smaller crowds? Do they even exist nowadays?

I guess when you go to auctions that they have a caravan following them around you will always have the bigger crowds.

I wonder how many people will be at this auction on sat the 24th where they say they have over 40 units up for auction?

That is actually a small size crowd for Metro.  Prices don't seem to bad either.  That $70 unit would be about right in my area ($20 for bike and rest a $50 gamble) depending on the look of the unit.  Your $450 to me was high - was getting those type of units for $150 - $200 bucks.

Small crowds are still out there but very few and far between.

Yep - there are a ton of us GA boys (and Gals if any lurking) here on these boards.  Even Drew is from Atlanta.  Thing about the place is it's so big there are always auctions going on if you are willing to drive.

442
With all that asphalt in Atlanta we will melt!!!!!  Hmm - wonder if that will keep the newbies away.  I know there wasn't as many people last summer as now at my auctions.

Who you calling an old-fart????;D  Even if I do know what you were referencing.

I just thought of this last night but may want to be added to the tips section of things.  For hobbiest like myself who don't have a businesses license, and just do this as a hobby.  For tax purposes you need to keep track of mileage, receipts from unit purchases, etc.  You do this in case/for when you make a profit at the end of the year.  If, like me this is a hobby you can't declare a loss.  However, if you get that tax form from e-bay since you sold so much there, that thrift store you sell at, etc. you can take your expenses against the profit.  That way you either pay nothing on your hobby income, or lower it greatly.

Depending on the size lot the person has not really Cobia.  We had to fight for years about people dumping garbage on our land.  It wasn't till more and more people started to move into the area and "trash service" was offered that the dumping stopped.  I still think it was due more to the people moving in area and perps were more likely to get caught.

But Rockin - if you can go to the same place where they are filming the show you know you'll make money.  Think about all those coins, guns, and $30 trash bags they find in those units.

This thread reminds me I need to go watch SW.  Have not seen this season and don't even remember the last time I watched AH.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: things that suck
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:01:02 AM »
Sometimes jumping the starting bid up like that works.  Many times in my area it doesn't.  Only once have I seen one of the regulars who did that get stuck with the unit and loose money.

Last year $50 was sort of the gambling price for just about any trash looking lockers.  This year even those trash lockers are brining in $100 - $150.  I still open or jump the bid to $50 and wait and see.  Win some and loose many.

Things that suck -- driving 40 miles to a small town facility that didn't post a phone # to find 6 people and only 1 out of 8 units.  Sucked was the 1 locker only containing a pile of moldy cloths up next to one wall.  Just the name of the game, but dang I was disappointed.

I sort of hate when these places bring out-of-town auction people.  Hate the real auctioneers anyways....don't like paying an extra 10% but that is just normal.

Missed all the auctions so far this week due to work.  Saturday I have a few options open to me.  Will call friday to see which one I hit.  Both are small town places so I'm hoping less then a dozen people.  Monday is my 3 facility evening auction that I got 2 units last month from.  Have a few other auctions this month that are the normal once every other month or once a quarter type places.  Only a few units but if can make the times will be great.

Normal crowd for us (depending on facility) is 20-40 people.  Large crowd is anything over 50 to me as you really start to get either a ton of looky-loos that are wasting your time, or newbie jacking prices up.  Some of our auctions are 150+.  Metro can be 150-200 people, was over 300 in January as they had almost 60 lockers posted online.  That was a long day to snag only 1 unit.

Garage Sales / Re: Yard Sales weekend of March 9~

Oh Girl - I almost spit coke out all over the screen I started to laugh so hard.  Just had a mental picture of my wife doing something like that and the look on her face.  I've had the same thing happen to me in reverse.  One day it's this old store that I pass every day.  Take a week vacation and on way to work pass the same store.  However, it's not the same store it's been torn down and a new one built all in 7 days.  Thought I was lost or something on way to work that morning at first.

Stores / Re: Anyone Actually Own a Store?
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:30:59 AM »
Don't count out the 1100 sq' there Money.  My buddy who opened his store is in what I would call a small garage / workshop.  Plus, there is a small trailer next to it.  Combined the two is maybe 1000 sq'.  He is only open on Thur - Sat, unless he has nothing else to do and opens.  Now his shop is crammed full with furniture and things.  He keeps a steady set of items selling however.  Cost to rent the lot is $900 a month.  His location is just super.  He really needs a bigger store but he can't beat his location.  He is toying with the idea of moving his car lot to the stores location and then building a larger building where his car lot sits now (1 block down).

What do I do with the personal items?  What is considered personal?
Do I have to pay tax?
What is a buyer's premium (BP)?
Do they take check / credit-cards?
Do they (managers, auctioneer, etc) go in the unit and get all the goodies out?

Why don't they cut the lock off like they do on TV?
Can you tell me where your secret spot is with only 5 bidders and 100s of lockers for cheap?

I'll have to go re-visit the newbie section's older threads to find most common questions.
