Is that all Home Depots? I dont remember seeing any trucks there I could rent.

That is what I was thinking.  The Home Depots around here do not have any that I have seen, nor have I seen it advertised.  Maybe they just do it in hte big cities.  I will have to call ours and see.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Wars: Dallas
« on: June 08, 2011, 07:52:35 PM »
Not likely, if anything it's going to bring more people out of the woodwork. These shows have effected every part of the country. You would be better off selling hot dogs and sodas at the auctions. ;)

Thats not a bad idea.  I might need to go buy an old roach coach, lol.

Awesome feedback Rollinradios
It is crazy that you mention the CDL because it is something my father mentioned to me last night for the first time.  That is an intriguing possibility for a second income.  Thanks again for your feedback.  Like I said this move wont be for a bit so try to keep some updates on here as to how things go for you.  Where are you located at?

I am in Northeast Texas, in a little town called Mt. Vernon.

I am glad someone has already put that bug in your ear.  Getting a CDL is not difficult at all.  You can either attend a truck driving school, which costs a little dough (I paid $2400), you can get recruited by a major company and they send you to school (though you will have to obligate time to them or repay), or you can study the handbook and take the tests without school.  I tried no school at first, had trouble locating a truck to take the driving test in.  I then went to school, it was a month long, and I am so glad I did.

After you get your CDL, you can look at doing seasonal work, like for indivuduals, like farmers.  That will give you the off time to do the auctions.  Just an idea.

I notice a lot of people complaining about how these shows have ruined the art of making a living from reselling storage unit finds because they have caused the prices of units to skyrocket.  All of the complaining is done around the premise that the shows only air the good units, and rarely show the bad.

I hate to give away this idea, but why don't some of you full-time storage auction buyers from the same areas get together and start a youtube channel that shows the "Real" Life of someone who does this full-time.  Show all aspects of it, from going to the auction to the clean up and trying to resell.  Show when you make a good profit and when you loose your a**.   If you get enough hits on the tube, you just might be able to land a contract for it.  Worse case scenario, you had fun doing it.

I would do it myself, but I'm not full-time and have not even bought my first unit.  I think it would be fun though.

The "Other" Job / Shouldn't this thread be "The 'Other' Job(s)"
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:53:24 PM »
I wish I could say I just have one other job.  I keep myself extremely busy:

I drive 18-wheeler full-time locally picking up milk at dairies
I own and operate a cb radio sales and repair shop part-time
I purchase, fix, and sell autos part-time with my dad
I create and sell wood burnt art
I make and sell handmade jewelry with my wife
I do scrap metal

Ps-would love any help for doing cleanouts too

Hey Mark, you might want to add your location to your profile or specify it here if you want someone to help with cleanouts.  I'm always up to making extra money when I have time.

I agree with the rental.  If you have a few cleanouts scheduled within a short time period, and they pay enough, stop by U-Haul.  It would be better to loose a little profit than be stuck with a vehicle you have to try to sell if you don't like doing it full time.

Talked to the buyer today; he said he had also discovered he could get $1500 to $2K for the car...hasn't listed it anywhere yet. He hauled it home, so his costs are only $325 so far...said he would go through dmv to get title to get more bucks I would guess.

Yup, will be worth a lot more money titled than untitled.

Getting titles here in TX is pretty easy.  All it pretty much takes is making sure its not a stolen car, then getting a bill of sale from the last person who had possession of it.  Take the bill of sale to the dmv and fill out the paperwork to have a title hearing.  About 4 weeks later you will have the title if there are no issues.

What's it Worth?? / Antique and Collectibles - online price guide
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:58:09 PM »
Let me start with the link:

http://www.kovels.com/

I was researching the history and possible value of an antique boot I found in a collectibles collection I recently purchased.  I have already posted a thread for the boot on here, so I am not going to get into that in this thread.

I contacted the boot manufacturer, which is still in business today.  They emailed me back today and gave me a little history lesson on their company and told me to go to kovels.com to find the current prices of their merchandise.

I went to that site and signed up for the free account.  I tried searching the price guide, but found nothing pertaining to that boot company, which is what I expected.  Well, they have a forum on there too.  I started a thread, coppied the one from that I posted on this forum, and am waiting to see if I get an answer.

I just figured this might be a good resource to add to your arsenal for looking up prices of items pulled from units.

Anyways, check it out, don't check it out, your choice.  I just thought I would pass it along.

Also, if anyone has more sites for researching prices of antiques and collectibles, fell free to add them to this thread.  I will also add more as I go.

Yeah, not many teams bring minors up and keep them.  Usually they are only brought up to fill a void when there are too many people on the DL.

Funny I didnt see this post before, oh well, welcome, and keep the good posting up

Yeah, I would say a little late, since we have already been chatting it up, lol.  I appreciate it anyways.

Welcome to the forum.  I am pretty new to the forum and storage auctions myself.  I joined the forum a week ago and have not been to any auctions yet.  I have done estate and regular auctions (have a regular to hit in 2 days with major sports memorabilia).

I have also bought the equivalent of a full storage unit full of antiques and collectibles from a buddy of mine a few days ago.  This is going to give me practice.  I can say that just bringing his stuff to my house and working on inventory and pricing is exhaustive, though I am enjoying it a lot.

So far I have inventoried 5 boxes, and have about 25 to 30 more to go.  I have only had a chance to list 1 item on CL, a 1982 military gasoline lantern.  We will see what happens with it while I continue the inventory process.

Now, I have a big suggestion for you if you are insistent on quiting your job completley.  Take the first month and spend some of your seed money to attend truck driving school and get your CDL.  There are thousands of trucking companies still hiring, even with the job market supposedly in the tank.  This will be a very nice safety net.  If you have your CDL, you can pretty much get a job and start within a few days.

Anyways, Wishing you the best of luck.  Check out the "What's it Worth" section.  I am going to post a link tonight for an antique pricing site, which I received from a shoe manufacturer while I was researching the price of an extremely old ladies boot.   After I check out the site I will start a thread with a small write up on it.

rossjr79      -      If you fell like shooting a pm with the minors you have you can, but I usually don't mess with minors, unless they have moved up to the majors.  The main thing I look at is that I will make a profit after spending the $20 plus shipping per auto to get it authenticated.  Also, if I search PSA's website and the name is not found, I will have to find out if they can authenticate it.  I generally only use PSA for authentication, sometimes Beckett (though I did not see it offered on their site anymore), because most any other companies do not have much of a reputation for these services.

rulesforrebels    -    You are on the right track for how to handle the low end cards.  I estimate that about 75% to 85% most collections are not worth much of anything.  I couldn't and would not want to count the amount of my cards that are worthless.  What I consider worthless is basecards and inserts up to $3 Beckett Value (BV).  Game used up to $10, and some up to $15 depending on the player.  And autos up to $15 - $20, once again player dependent.

I have a lot of low end cards that I will almost never be able to sell.  One day I hope to have my low end percentage down below 50%.  That is the reason I do not buy them.  The only way I get them now is when I open packs of cards.

When you do get an idea of what you have, I would like to hear.  If I get some from you, we might work out some of it in trade/cash if I have any foriegn currency you want (I know I don't have any Candian or Brazilian).

Craigslist / Re: I am about to get a lot of online selling practice
« on: June 06, 2011, 02:58:58 AM »
I just got home with a third load of stuff from my friend.  There was a major turn of events tonight.  I showed up to his house to pick up the third load of his stuff and after I handed him $400 I left the third load of my stuff.

I probably have one more load to go and then I can start the sorting and inventory process.  In the past 3 days I have spent a total of 15 hours packing and moving these loads to my house.  I have averaged 2 hrs of sleep a day.  Needless to say, I will not be doing inventory tomorrow.  I am going to crash the second I come through the front door!

Hey Drew, I was beginning to wonder if I shoul have started this in the "Non Related Plugs" section?  If so, can you please move this thread for me?  Thanks.

Yeah, it would have been good to get that lot from you.

I agree, he did you wrong.  I understand why he offered so low, but he didn't have to lie about it.  If I were in his situation, I would have just made my offer, and jew with you a bit.  If you asked what I expected to get out the stuff, I would have told the truth.

And the truth in my opinion is.....

Well, after typing what I had already, I just went and looked up that roster.  I really want to cry now.  He is going to do what I would do.  I would be getting COAs for all of the auto stuff, especially the Lonhorns complete team with some major NFL stars sigs on it.

There is no way he is going to only make $125, because he will never sell a Tony Romo or Vince Young auto anything without getting a COA.  If he does, he will be out of business too soon.  The only reason I say he lied only becase he told you what he would make if all he did was take them and imedaitely put the stuff out for sale.  And that would be an extremely bad business decision.

Without the COAs, I do agree it is extremely difficult to sell autos.  I have some autos in the lot I got from my buddy, 1 guy in particular (Troy Aikman), that I am going to get COAs on.  They will probably sell for at least 2 to 3 times the amount than without.

Now, with that said, I would have paid you more, but without the COAs, which I would have had to pay for, and couldn't sell as authentic without, I would have probably started my offer around $100 to $125.

Without the COAs, it would take awhile to sell the autos, which is what was probably your issue.  That expalins the no-shows.  Someone saw the stuff listed, got extremely excited, did not notice that they were not authenticated, offered what they would pay if there were COAs, studdied the listing again, and decided that was too much money to gamble.

He is probably going to get it authenticated by PSA.  And it costs $20 for each signature.

Without the COAs, the dealer is going to make somewhere around $115 to $135 for the autographs.  With the COAs, and there is no way how much it  they will sell for after the authentication.

Well, I wish you would turn back the clock and get the stuff back for me.  I would have bought them in a heartbeat and had them shipped up here!

Flea Markets / Re: How do you price clothing at flea markets?
« on: June 05, 2011, 08:16:47 PM »
Ya but you cant base that for every unit. Some units have nothing but good stuff. Others have nothing but junk and trash. Please take a look at my worst unit, you will see what I mean. As well as looking at my best unit. Hell for that matter Mr A just cashed in big time. Best advice, bid on what you see, and take a small gamble with what you dont see. Not every unit will have a WOW factor, truth be known, most lockers dont have a wow factor. I myself have been lucky where I get some kind of wow factor in MAJORITY of my units. Even if that happens to you, dont let it get to your head :)

You will always be wanting a major hit, but just like anything else, just plan on making at least some profit, and when/if you hit big, you will be pleasantly surprised.  If you go into any bidding expecting to score majorly, you will be extremely dissapointed and turned off when it does not turn out.
