Garage Sales / Re: Yard Sales weekend of March 9~
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:23:00 AM »
Hope you don't get picked for Jury duty today.

Flea turned out to be a good day.  Started to worry at first.  We got a late start and didn't get there till almost 9am (clocks didn't autoforward) and they open at 8.  Didn't miss much as few people and vendors were open.  Sales before noon were less then $50.  Last time I was there on a Sunday I made more money in morning then afternoon.  This time it was reversed.  Got more of a crowd after midday, and at the very end of the day at close.

My world coins and paper money sold well again.  CDs and DVDs did pretty well again this week (strange how one week don't move and next do).  Only a few .25 and .50 item sold.  All three of my easter baskets sold, but neither of my easter bunnies.  Got rid of a pair of boots been holding on to.  Did sell some of the cloths but it was touch and go for a bit.  Sold 1 camo GA hat quickly, two pairs of jean shorts, and then in last hour of sale a number of kids/baby cloths (.25 2T and under, kids .50) and 2 kids football / basketball jersy shirts.

Surprises - the digging in box for kids cloths didn't really work till last hour.  Will seperate sizes out in a number of different totes or next time.  Did get a compliment on the high end kids/baby cloths for cheap.  The adult high end cloths, shoes, etc. didn't move.  Most of these are what I call "Black People Style" clothing and most of the shoppers yesterday were white and hispanic.  So I'll save them for a saturday trip.  My hats didn't move - so going to keep only really good ones / logos and send rest to Goodwill.  Jeans I'm going to keep as had some interest in them ($2 pair).  90% of all the other t-shirts, blouses, shirts, etc. are going to Goodwill as soon as I inventory everything.  Have a few boxes of smalls I'm just going to donate to them also.  Tired of sitting on them at this point.

Most of my table is woman/household/kitchen items and cd/dvds.  Need to get more man stuff like tools and electronics.

After expenses I made $150 which is my highest to date.  $30 of that was the cloths rack I sold to one of the vendors.  Since I got it for free and have another was no biggie.

My helper (aka oldest daughter) abandonded me at noon yesterday to make survival bracelets.  The couple next to us that was helping one of the vendors makes them.  They showed my daughter how to and even gave her a ton of bracelets.  She help them make more to sell in return and is now working to make them at home.

All in all a very good day.  Is just time to break out the awning and sun-screen.

That is great Money - I may have to try the yard sale thing...but at my mothers location and not mine (better location / parking).

Going to hit the flea myself in the morning (sunday).  Should of gone this morning instead of to auctions but wasn't ready.  Taking more stuff then normal.  May spend another $12 for the space next to me - not decided yet.  Taking all my baby, kids cloths, and a number of adult cloths since got that free rack.  Figure I'll price stuff as $.25 for 2T and under, $.50 for kids, $1 for adult shirts/tops, and $2 for pants.  If don't get any bites will just offer all the jeans to one of the vendors that sales jeans at a quarter each and the rest will hit Goodwill.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: renting storage units
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:04:55 PM »
Like the others said it all depends on the facility.  If it's a popular spot and they are full then normally there is a waiting list and they want you to clean it out ASAP.  Those places are few and far between.  If they are not full they will gladly rent you the locker for a month or more.

Your other option is to see if they will give you a few extra days.  Normally if it's a large packed unit, or you buy multiple units and ask nicely they will.  Specially if you have purchased from them before and they know you clean your units well.

Instead of renting for a whole month some places will let you rent for like a week or two.

Myself - I keep toying with the idea of renting a 5x10 or so at one of the many places I buy from.  Not really for the storage but to use their dumpsters and to sell CL items from.

Those do look like good units Cheesehead.  Prices still seem a little high to me, specially with the number of people you reported.  However, if it's like around here most of the store people are starting to run low on inventory.  So they may not be bidding against newbies but each other now.

Auction today was a total bust.  Buddy and me both went to this small town auction.  Had 4 units and 2 in other town.  Got there and they only had 1 unit.  Opened the door and the 8 of us that were there just groaned and said just close it.  Unit was empty except for the pile of trash / moldy cloths in a line on the left.  I buy trash units all the time and make money but even this one made me take a step back.  Try another small town again next saturday.

Saw an estate sale sign on way into town so stopped into there.  That was a waste also.  Asking $12 for tire iron and $8 for a wrench (minus 20% off).  Dresser was $800 - I just shock my head.

Day wasn't a complete bust.  Made $63 turning in scrap, plus sold a dryer for $25 and fridge for $15 before scrapped it.  So $103 bucks for next week.  Buddy headed back to his store and then called me later.  He hit a yard sale in a upper scale area in his area and came home with 53 CDs, vac, and bunch of other stuff all for $50.  Sent me a text later saying he sold the corner cabinet for $49.99 that he got out of the $35 unit he bought last week.  Still has a very nice mirror from that unit (rest of furniture was junk).

U-haul today, two locations to choose from.  Can't make the first location but did the second.  I was surprised - about 20 of us today compared to the 50 or so last month.  Auctioneer said he is seeing the crowds starting to drop some.  Mostly regulars today with a few new faces.  Most of the lockers went to regulars and one I know went to a newbie.  Prices were moderate to high.  Bid on several but got outbid so still dry so far this month.

Buddy of mine got a double unit for $600 at the first location.  Said it is 2 10x20 units combined and packed full.  Asked me to come help him after work since U-haul only gives you 24 hours.  Glad he got back in the game.  He had been dry for the past 3 months not wanting to come off his cash.

I'm happy for ya Austin and a bit jealous.  Very rare now a days to find good even 1/4 full lockers for less then $100 in my area.  Hope your luck holds out for you.  Make your sales and get ready for your next unit.

I buy complete computer systems (case, memory, cpu, hdd, cards) for $5 off people.  Don't care if they work or not.  Old style TVs I wouldn't touch.  The new LCD flat screens I'd have to do some research on.  Disposal fee's may eat into any profit that you could make.  Would have to see the locker to give you my bid.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Just a couple questions.
« on: March 09, 2012, 11:46:13 AM »
Welcome to the forums Adnara - you will find a wealth of info here.

I do this as a hobby myself.  Started out with $400 in gambling money and I normally hover around that point.  I see two main obstructions for you and your husband.  First, with a small car it will take you many more trips to clean out even a small unit.  This limits your buying options.  Second, is going to be space.  You can quickly run out of room unless you can turn and burn quickly.

Once you use the search button and have additional questions just ask.  If you want to clear up answers or questions you find in your searching just bumb the original thread.

The shows are still very popular right now.  So more and more newbies are hitting the auctions and have driven up prices.  So be patient, know what you want out of a unit, and hit up every auction that you can.

If it's insulated you will get less then if it is stripped.  If you don't want to mess with it just take it in as is.  Still make $20+ on it.

Scrapping for me is part of storage auctions.  Anything that is metal and/or electronic and busted gets taken apart / scrapped as is.

Ouch Rockin - I can feel your pain (member I lost $875 last year).  Think I wouldn't of signed any paperwork as soon as I found out it was the "tenant" and not the facility I was buying from.  Red flags would of started to go off I think.  I try to be very careful on units that just look too good.  With many things showing.  In fact I've gotten to the point if a unit isn't on my paper but up for auction that is the first flag that goes up.  Granted I bid on one of those units today but didn't win.

I very well may stay away from that facility in the future.  Sounds like they are starting to do some shady things IMO.  The no announcement thing at start of the auction should of made the contract null and void as it's now not a contract in good faith.

Finished the normally 7 facility caravan today, but we only had lockers at 5 places.  Starting crowd was 25-30 people, mid-day saw close to 50 people, last stop (1 locker out of way) we only had 15 people.  We had one really good unit go for $1420.  I bid on 4 units but was outbid by a large margin.  Still kicking myself for not bidding another time or two on one unit.  Wife had wanted some of the text books in the unit.  Oh well, U-haul Friday.

Overall prices were still higher then what I want to pay.  In fact the normal whale was even talking about how high prices are.  Most of the high dollar units went to people I've seen but not often.  Only one regular purchased multiple units today and he paid out the nose IMO.  He said they needed inventory bad so who knows.

I did spend $10 to buy 2 desktop computers and a monitor from one of the winners.  Also pulled some scrap out of the dumpster at one of the locations.

That is not all that uncommon.  Most of the time it's pets that you find.  However, a good percentage is also grandma, grandpa, etc.'s remains.

UGA - glad she at least told you that up front.  We have many places here that combine units but don't say anything.  Or do company units and don't say anything.

I'm off for my caravan Thursday - not many units however.  About 20 units total for 7 locations.  Suspect will be down to 10 or less by the morning.  Friday is U-haul, Saturday an out of the way town, then more next week.  Will try and hit as many as work permits.  Should be a busy next 12 days.

Flea Markets / Re: Sales for 03/03

Lol Money - you have those days.  The guy I was to meet up with today called around lunch and canceled.  I'm just glad that he called and I didn't waste time sitting around for him.  Contacted the other lady and had another email (prob spam fisher).  So may unload it this week after all.  If not I've decided to Goodwill the set.

Hope you get some nice weather.  Just checked my local forcast and it's going to drive me nuts.  Thursday and Friday is mid 70s.  Saturday is upper 50s with 10+ mph wind -- which means most people stay home.  Up side is I'll be able to hit a small saturday auction in a small town 30 mins from me.

I'm still making most of my money from storage units.  Was able to get a few decent ones for great to decent prices.  I have had an uptick in individual sales from ebay.  Finally making some contacts to buy broken computers and such equipment.  Can then turn around and repair/resale, part out, or scrap them.  Not a ton of money but is helping the bottom line.
