Flea Markets / Re: First time out
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:50:20 PM »
You would be surprised how many people will recycle cans and toss everything else out.  Even my parents who know I scrap one day had a pan to put in the garbage and I'm like...nope that goes in back of the truck..

I've found a few very cheap pots/pans that I bought just for scrap value then to use.  Or even just taken away for people busted electronics, tvs, appliances, lamps, etc.

Well I tossed my stallion up for $5 since someone had another for $10.  Will see if I get a bite or not.  I'm still trying to figure out where I got it from.  I want to say it was out of one of my girls toy chest but honestly don't remember buying it.

I just learned what to look for in horses, match box cars, and silverware.  Soon I'll have to do a MoiveMan and use an ipad, mostly to keep track of what to look for :)

All of my computer stuff did well.  Made a little over $400 after fees.  So between that, the flea sales, and a few CL sales I'm at the break even point I think from my big loss last year.  Will have to calculate it tonight.  If factor in what I've kept then I should finally be in the black.

Money - I hope your aunt does stuff for you.  I try not to sell other people's items at the flea.  If they want me to sell their stuff (for free).  They best be helping me in some other way.  I just have too much work and not enough time/pay to do everything for free for friends / relatives.  Certain exclusions do apply ;)

WOW.... I sold a "fallaparticle board" dreser for $50.

Lol MovieMan - I had both newspaper wrapped and "bubble wrapped" dollar tree figurines in a box I had forgotten all about.  Now I know why it was just stuck in a corner of shed.

That is great Money.  Vendor's can be ruthless or very helpfull.  Just depends on the person I've learned.  Early in the morning the first two dozen people you get are only looking for jewelry / coins.  I've had the same people ask me that questions mutliple times during the day.  No - I don't have gold jewelry that I'm stupid about and going to sell to you for $5.

I've learned the market shifts greatly from trip to trip.  Not sure why but some days my CD/DVD/Games sell like hotcakes.  This week I only sold 1.  Flip side - my world coins sold pretty well and normally only get interest in "US silver/gold" coins.  Go figure.

I did learn some new things this last time.  I had a horse tossed in with a bunch of other horses, toys, etc. in my $.50 item.  One of the ladies down 3 tables pulled it out and told me I may not want to sell it w/o doing some research.  Was a Bryer horse or something.  Ebay has them for $10+, so I put it on ebay for $5 to see.  Pulled out a bunch of silverware that was "Franklin Silversmith - China" stamped on it.  So trying to sell on ebay instead of the $.25 each they were being tossed in.

Every trip I take to the flea I learn something new.  So even when don't make much money I'm at least learning value of items I didn't have a clue about.

Don't ever toss your silverware, pots, pans, etc. in the trash.  You can at least get money for them at the scrap yard.  If you don't feel like hauling it in yourself - once you get a pile of it take a picture and post on CL.  Someone will come buy it from you, even if only for a few bucks.  Is just a little extra more money for basic trash.

Donations & Taxes / Re: Anyone been to Goodwill auctions?
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:18:21 AM »
I've done the shopgoodwill.com auctions a few times.  Those prices have gotten up there anymore to just not be worth it.  The local SA does an auction auction the first of every month.  Not checked Goodwill auctions locally however.  Never seen a sign or paper advertisement.  Who knows - could be missing something.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Returning personal items
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:09:07 AM »
For me most paperwork is tossed / burned.  Only things I return are pictures (minus the frames), SSN cards, check/credit cards, check books, marriage / divorce certificates, car / house title, tax forms, etc.  Most of your mail, bills, etc. get tossed.

If the locker is like my most recent purchase and is a facility locker (didn't know at time) I don't even bother.  You get 2 or more different families in a unit.  So for example I have cruise pictures of a black couple, pictures of old black lady, tax returns in 3 different names, pictures of a white lady, etc.  Is sort of sad as I have a OLD hand made photo album with old black and white pictures.  All of them are portraits or 1 class picture and not landmarks which would of been great.  Would return it to owner in a heartbeat if knew which "owner" it was from this locker.  So I'm not going to waste more time/money to return the box of personals.  I'll keep them in shed for a time in case the facility calls looking.

When you do return a box of personal items be sure to put the Auction Date, Location, and Unit # on the box.  It really helps out the facility and also helps you keep track of which box goes where.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Thrift stores/goodwill

Cloths I stay away from.  Heck - I donate boxes upon boxes of them to Goodwill each month.  Electronics, and tools I'll research and buy.  Have sometimes found craftsman, snap-on, etc. tools for $.50 to $1 in various stores.  Guy next to me this weekend at the flea said he takes all the rusted, pitted, etc. craftsman back to sears for tradein.  Then waits a month or so and takes the new packages back to the store for gift cards.  I could see that working around Christmas but who knows if that works all the time.

My biggiest problem is I need to learn how to test electronics or repair them.  I have multiple older stero systems that power up but no speaker to test.  Also have 3 car radio amps, a box of car radios, two-way mixer, etc. from this last unit.  Don't want to scrap them till I know they don't work or are worthless.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Mad People?
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:39:27 PM »
You don't live up north do ya?  Seriously, I've not had that problem myself.  A few of us will rib each other but no one has gotten mad.  You either bid to win or drop out when get to your max.  I think many people that get mad are those that get hot and heavy in the bidding and hate to loose.

eBay / Re: What have I been waiting for?!?!
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:35:34 PM »
I've found for most items the 1 free picture is enough.  I also offer to email them higher quality pictures if they want.  Of course I've not gotten all fancy with ebay yet and don't use any of the tools.  May have to start as I'm getting more and more into it again.

eBay / Re: Ebay items from storage lockers
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:32:54 PM »
I try and use up all of my 50 free listings a month.  Either with new items, or re-list.  Now for storage unit items I just try and stay competative.  I mostly use flat rate shipping by USPS.  If item is to big or bulky I box it, weigh it, and let person bidding do the calculation.  I give them priority mail or normal mail options.

I mostly only sell items worth $5 or more.  Only during the last week or free listing days will I post under $5 items.  I try to keep pictures of everything handy.  I do all my digging at home.  So as I search boxes, etc. I'll take a picture of any item I want to research or post on ebay.

Heck - you know how much a good casket could sell for ;)

Think I would of passed on that one.  Then again since my wife is into CSI and working on her masters she would of gone for it.

Garage Sales / Re: Winter Yard Sales in Southeast
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:23:43 PM »
In my area of GA I see only a few post on CL for sales.  Don't know how well they do but there is very little competetion.  I did the flea today since weather was in the mid 60s and did well.

Flea Markets / Weekend Sales (1-28-12)
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:20:34 PM »
Since I'm going to be out of town next weekend and not able to sell I figured I would give this weekend at the flea a try.  Weather was going to be mid 60s, sunny, with wind of 5-10 mph.  Only had a few times with wind, and temp was nice.  Crowds were heavier then I expected.  I ended up with my 2nd best single day.  Didn't get rid of a ton of new inventory but got rid of some odd shape items that don't fit in totes well.

Big hits were:

.25 bucket
.50 bucket
world coins

Also traded 2 items that hadn't sold in 3 months for some brand new gas stove grates.  These things are heavy cast iron and worth scrap if can't sell them.  Bout to check fleabay.

Gratz on the ring Millertime.  Sounds like at least decent size crowd compared to the 50+ I keep seeing.  I'm still waiting on my gold.  Keep getting close but no cigar.  So far a class ring (fake w/ no stone), gold plated ring w/ tag, junk jewelry.  Only thing so far is sterling silver bracelets.

Talked to dad about the other facility that I didn't attend.  Crowd was about 1/2 of what I had.  Think due to just being 1 unit.  The unit sold for $450 however.  I was surprised when he told me as the paper just said BBQ, boxes, bags.  He said it was a 10x10 with one of the nice large grills that you can use charcole or gas.  Everything else was so/so.  He said grill prob would be a 200 sell.  But didn't see where the rest of the money was going to come from.  Think it was one of the new regulars that got it.
