Flea Markets / Re: How do you price clothing at flea markets?
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:20:07 PM »
I've not tried any CL post for cloths.  I see people do it I just don't know if would have any interest.  Except for the email spam people validating the email.  I may try it for heck of it.

Most cloths I get also hit Goodwill.  I just can't seem to move them at all.  Keeping only about 10% of what I find in units currently to try selling in March.  Most everything else is going to donation.  When I'm doing my unit estimation and I see trash bags w/ cloths I either don't count them at all or use $5.  Figure I can get maybe 5 articles out of a trash bag that are not torn, rip, stain, etc. that can donate to Goodwill.  If can actually find something worth money and sell that is just a faster way to get into the black on that unit.

Gratz Magic on your first locker.  Hopefully it will be a good one for you.

On ebay - I't all depends on the item and if I have multiple's of it.  I package the item, weight it, etc. but I don't "close" the package.  A few times I've had people win multiple auctions from me and then can save us both on shipping.  As for package material - I get everything from work.  I grab any boxes that I need from the loading doc before the campus recycle people come and get it.  I save the bubble wrap, air packs, foam pellets, etc. from when we get in supplies and computer parts.  Your newspaper can work well depending on the item your shipping.  I found a website years ago that listed various packing material and what they are good to use.  Best of course was the liquid foam that companies use that fill every nook and cranny of the box.  Great for breakables but really can't re-use it.

I agree with you on how some other people package things.  No matter what I ship I make sure it doesn't bounce around at all or much in package.  I had one guy ship me a megladon tooth (fossil) once before just wrapped up in a newspaper.  I gave him neutral feedback as that was real risky and I was pissed.

Ouch Todd you must still be pissed off.  Was a little hard to read your post.  As for the units - ya they are dreaming.  Must be a mom and pop type of place?  Any corporate facilaties just want the units cleaned out and gone.  It cost them to run the legal ad.  If they are full they are missing out on rent revenue, etc.

As for Cobia - I can understand a min bid now that you said all of that.  If it was just the "default fee" they would still be dreaming.

Hope your luck changes Todd.  I know the frustration as my truck was in the shop in Nov & Dec.  Then missed a flea market day due to oil pressure light (was the sensor thank god, so easy fix).  Movieman has some van issues right now.  So your not alone.

Well my streak of only 2 units a month avg continues.  Struck out last night (didn't even bid) and didn't win any of the 4 units just now.  Today's auction is one that only holds auctions every other month.  Normally the lockers are not great but ok, and the prices match.  Today was a mix story.  I was # 17 on the bidding sheet.  We were using the back of the page which is a first.  Saw only 3 other regulars.  The rest were new faces to me.

Unit 1) Particle board furniture, table w/ no chairs, odds and ends - $175 (noob)
Unit 2) Washer (coin op), Dryer, 1 tub with looks like a blanket, couch, and boombox - $85 (noob)
Unit 3) Bed frames, guitar, plastic trees - $50 (I didn't bid to give one of the regulars chance to win)
Unit 4) 3 matresses, 2 box springs, dresser w/ cloths, round table w/ 2 chairs, stack of CDs and various DVD cases. - $200 (regular I think)

I bid on unit 2 and 4.  Passed on 3 since regular liked it.  He has lost money his last 2 units.  As he said I could of bid $60 and gotten it.  Told him it was ok - other then the guitar ($50), not worth the cleaning w/ chance of rain.

Unit 4 I liked - was about the best looking unit except for the matress/boxspring.  I stayed in till $100 and quit.  Cost me $20 to dump the matress/box and the furniture looked marginal.

Previous auction I may of been able to get #2 for $50, #3 if had wanted it, and #4 for 100 or less.  Is why I love this place.  Can normally get cheap lockers that don't have a WOW factor, but make you money.

Calling to confirm the auction on Sunday.  However, I think it will be as much of a circus as MLK monday and Saturday auctions are.

The regular that bought #3 - talking with him about yesterday afternoon at the Public Storage auctions.  He said there was moderate (50+) crowds at the 3 facilities.  He paid $300 for a unit and said he will loosse $200.  This on top of his $120 loss from our caravan at start of the month.  Told him he was skunking out.  He is one of the old regulars that didn't give me a hard time when started and even told me some of the companies to watch out for.  So I try to re-pay the kindness when I can.  So on a marginal locker I'll pass on it if he is winning.

Forgot to mention:  Place has 1 other location near where I live.  Can't make it as too far from work so called father to hit it up.  Only 1 small unit there.  If none of the noobs go, we may snag it for cheap.  Waiting on a phone call now :)

When ebay does the free days like yesterday and today is a great time to post all those small single items that may sell but not for a ton of money.  This is the time that I put up my $1 - $5 starting bid items like cloths, books, glassware, etc.  I use my 50 free a month for $10 and up items.

Now if it's towards the end of the month and I still have XX number of free listings and no more larger items, the small value comes back out.

Hardest part is doing all the pictures and pre-work.  I've not tried it but ebay has various tools you can use for listings.  One is a way to load an excel file to create multiple listings.  Need to look into that and see if it cost or not.  If not I may start to use it.

Medals that I get from sporting events and things like that 99% of the time go into my scrap pile.  Most of them are plated and only good for shred price.  A few unique looking medals or any that are military or replica medals I'll research, take pictures, and try to sell.  Even if only get $1 for them it is normally more then I would in scrap price.  Of course I nickle and dime a unit to death if things are slow and I have time on my hands.  Other times these type items just sit in a corner for a slow day.

Ebay can be profitable despite the fee's.  I've had several items that I couldn't sell at the flea or CL.  Put them on ebay and they sale.  May or may not be but $5 profit but is more then I had.  I use mostly priority flat rate boxes and online postage.  So just drop off the packages on my way home since I pass 3 post offices.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Won my first auction. Crafts galore!

You can hardly go wrong with a full locker for $45.  Even if you sold everything at $1 each you would make money.  Gratz on your first locker.

Sounds like some good flea material also.  I know arts/crafts do well at my local flea.  I just have not found anything to take.

Well my daughter and I attended the 5:30 auction this evening.  From a start of 8 units, we were down to 3.  I was # 19 on the bid sheet, with a good 50-60 people there.  I had heard bad things about this place but figured would go mostly to look.  Guy announces the rules and this is one of the places that takes Cash and Credit Card.  I was like oh crap.  Guy asked was there any questions and one lady pops up and ask "So you take credit cards - that means we have to pay the outstanding balance of the unit" or something like that.  I gaged and had to work hard to smother a laugh.  I was like you got to be kidding me.

As for the units:  Frist - full 10x10 with dresser, couch, baby items (stroller, bouncy, etc), full but tossed in every which way.  Sold for $475 to one of the new regulars (3 months).  Second unit was another 10x10 with a beat up cheap trunk, a nice looking wood trunk, 1 nice display type cabinet for nick-nacks.  About the size of a old medicine cabinet.  The rest of the furniture was beat, broken, and water stained.  Some guy and his wife won it for $375.  Last unit was another 10x10 that when they opened the door I saw about a dozen office/computer chairs stacked on top of other stuff.  Was in back of the crowd and I didn't even stop to look.  Just kept going and got in my truck.

4 units in paper up for sale Friday.  90% chance of rain Friday and 100% Saturday.  If strike out Friday will try Sunday and then we will be into Feb.

Lol Money - I would be one of your buyers depending on what you have.  I turn and burn most of my inventory that I get all the time.  Other items I'll hold onto for weeks or months on end.  It all depends on shed space really.  Things like golf clubs, high end electronics, etc. I'll hold for a bit.  The clubs should sell come March when it starts to get warm and the golf tournys start to come to the area.

Things that I look to buy at the flea / yard sales are:
1) old computers, parts, and accessories that may or may not work for $5 or less per cpu.
2) copper, brass, silver, etc. metal items that are selling below melt price.
3) old coins / currency that I can resale on ebay or add to my collection.
4) specialty tools to sell on ebay (Brother in law helps me here)
5) bed rails (mostly at yard sales but buy for $5 - $10 and sell for $20 - $30 to thrift / competetion)
6) Ham radio items
7) Anything that I see in wanted / barter section of CL that I think can make profit on.  Only done this once so far.

Good luck MovieMan - but at the normal rate of payment now a days you may be down to 30-40 by auction.  Still that is a large number of units and sure to bring the crowds.

Missing the afternoon PS one due to work.  May hit up a 5:30 auction tonight with daughter just to look.  I've heard mix things about this place so not really interested in buying.  Friday auctions I may not hit since it is suppose to be thunderstorms in area.  Will have to wait and see what 9:45 is like in the morning.  Going to confirm a Sunday auction.  If that is legit I'll be there Sunday with daughter.

Best thing to do is just put them back in with the other personal items and return them to the storage facility.  Items like that, including stock certificates, many times you can't do anything with.  As Alias said you could only hope for a "thank you gift".  I wouldn't try and contact the person as it may be more trouble then worth.  Then they would want "all of their" stuff back that you stole, etc.  If you could even find them when the storage company couldn't.

Like rockin said don't worry about it Shmoopy.  You will learn quickly one way or the other :)

Honestly - for me I sell most of my DVDs, CDs, Games to other vendors.  I sell mine between $1 and $3 each.  From price checking on days I'm not selling most of the vendors are going $4-5 for the same items.  So if they buy it from me and can make an extra buck good for them.  If not they are sitting on the inventory instead of me.

I sold a 2' xmas tree with lights to a vendor for $1.  She put it up in her shop for decoration.  She came back a few other times that day and purchased some items for herself.  I also made a good contact with her and stop and say hello every time I'm out that way.  Is how I find out how the crowds are on weekends I'm not there.  I also learn what sells and what doesn't.  Is how I found out about forks.  The lady said she can't keep forks in stock.  So I lucked up on a lot of kitchen items and sure enough, they sold.  Something I would of only taken if I had room was taken specificly before other items due to her advice.

Now, like MovieMan I also browse around the tables of my competetion and vendors looking for good deals.  I've even purchased a few items from my competetion at the flea and then sold on ebay for a profit.

Well I took a early lunch break at 9am to hit a 9:30 auction 10 miles from work.  Almost turned around when called to make sure they were going to have the auctions and got "you can come and wait".  Seems this girl was new and had no freaking idea what she was doing.  Plus, the paperwork was a mess.  So auction started 20 mins late.

Crowd was small.  Only 8 or 9 registered bidders and like 20 people.  That included the 2 facility ladies, and the auctioneer.  We had two cute young ladies that were looky loos.  Another guy that had done storage auctions years ago and had just came back to see what had changed.  The rest were regulars or new regulars.  Three units out of the five.  Prices were ok but not great with a 10% bp, 7% tax, and a $40 cleaning deposit per locker.  Buddy bought 2 of the 3 lockers.  The last locker was the best.  Packed 10x10 to the ceiling.  U-haul boxes, nice brown leather couch upright in front with no rips/tears, baby stuff.  That unit sold for $700.

Only 1 unit at the next facility so I came back to work.  Two auctions thursday (may make 1), and 1 friday.  Need to verify but may even have one this Sunday, which would be different.
