Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Digging in locker story time.

Well out of some 492 VHS tapes - I have 78 good movies/shows/cartoons.  All the others were either damaged or blank tapes with various shows and movies taped on them.  Can't sell those so they went to the dump.

Alias - scrapping can be time consuming but profitable.  Many things I break down just for the fun of it and to make some money.  I just keep stacking the stuff up and then on slow / rainy type days I'll start breaking it down and seperating it.  I really prefer computer since can sometimes fix them for a profit.

Just did another box I just had sitting from Monday's lockers.  It has dozens and dozens of hats in it.  Sock hats, boony hats, baseball hats, etc.  Some nice Georgia Bulldog hats in brand new type condition.  A few Atlana Braves baseball caps, etc.  May be able to make some money off them - will see in the spring.

I got outbid - is up to $65 now with 3 days still to go.  Not worth it to me now.  Maybe if I knew bikes better then I would change my mind but I'll pass on this one.

Just wanted to mention the site as you can sometimes find good deals on it.  More and more agencies are going to it then doing their own auctions anymore.

Flea Markets / Re: Not there yet. :(
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:32:17 PM »
Stuff on the ground at my flea doesn't get much of a look.  If it's not waist level and easy for them to pick-up and examine they don't bother.  So I take a folding table and a rack frame that has glass shelves when I go.  The glass shelves makes the nick nacks and things like that just look better.

Talked with one of the guys that sales at the flea all the time.  During this time of year they have a 40% reduction in foot traffic.  Thus it's just not worth going out on Saturday for me.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea market prices
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:27:23 PM »
It all depends on the flea IMO.  We have two flea markets just over a mile from each other.  One advertises a ton, is right next to the main highway.  The vendors there are 10-20% higher then the other market.  Some of that I think is due to overhead being higher.

They love when I show up as I sell many 1-3 items that they buy and then try and resale at $5 or so.  I know that is what they are doing and have no problem with that.  I'm mostly turning and burning inventory and don't want to sit on it for weeks on end till the right buyer comes by.

I would leave the trailer at home if this is your first time out.  You may be very surprised at the units quality, # of people there, and prices.

As for the "condition" unit - that is really up for the facility to decide.  Once you pay for the unit you don't have to give anything back.  It is common courtsy, and in some of the facility rules you sign - to give back personal info.  So pictures, tax returns, check books, etc. should be given back.

That gold ring that her late husband gave her you can keep or "sell back" to her at a cheaper price.

General speaking - if a person has multiple units it is best to try and get both if you get one.  Or you better be very friendly with who ever wins the other unit.  Many times you have items in your unit that they could need for a set and vice versa.  This is when you are dealing with furniture mostly.

You can break them down and scrap the metal.  I just don't do it as the time/effort vs reward is not great.  Would just sell at shred price I think which is $.1250 a lb currently in my market.

That is great MovieMan that you got some stuff.  I cleaned and sorted my locker from Monday.  Am 100% sure it was a "combined" unit now.

Next week is interesting even if I can't make all the auctions:  2 pods for sale on tuesday, 2 locations on wed (1 only has 1 unit), small 3 facility caravan and 1 late evening auction thursday, 2 facility caravan friday (4 units, then 1), and a 3 facility caravan Saturday.

Saturday I need to confirm as not seen anything in the paper.  They normally hold last saturday of month.  Should have a number of units as they skipped Dec due to Christmas.

Hmm - at $2 each I maybe could of made as much money or little more scrapping it.  Would have to take one a part and weight the items to figure out.  If this one don't work that is what will happen to it.

The Lounge / Re: SOPA. Do your part.

Oh I already started hitting stuff up last week when read about both bills.  Notice it's the finance / retail / cable giants that support it.  Any second hand type website is against it.  If it does pass and the companies get their way it could really hurt oure re-sale efforts.

I know some new people have registered and said they are from NC.  Don't remember the area or anything.  As for the crazy - it's worse now then it was mid-July last year.

I'm sure with the popularity of the show they may be getting paid more.  Also, it wouldn't surprise me if they are going "celebrity" or "publicity" gigs on the side.  Then add in the ton of foot traffic that they are now getting at the store(s) which may of increased sales, even with increased prices.

It's like Covington just outside of Atlanta years ago.  They use to film "In the Heat of the Night" tv show in that small town.  Local guy sold all sorts of souvineer stuff from his store on main street.  You could watch them film, etc.  The show brought in many people to the area that normally wouldn't of gone.  Thus, more money, more buisness, etc.  Now it's all part of Atlanta for the most part.  Some of that is urban sprawl I suspect, and other part just growth from the show/interest.

Ouch and I thought my fee's were bad enough.  Of course I think mine are the highest for this area.  But by the time I went to the next county landfill the gas would put it on par or over the $20 flat fee.

So what do you do with them?  Considering 50-75% of all units has one or the other, or multiple beds in them?

Unless it is clear totes many times it's the luck of the draw what you get in boxes / totes.  That said - you start to get a feeling what is in lockers based on past expierence / finds.

For myself I look for CDs, DVDs, kitchen stuff as it all sells well at the flea.  Lots of cloths are a turn off, but shoes in boxes are good.  Money can be made with furniture if you know what you are doing and have the space to store / sell it.  Once you start to buy a number of lockers you can sort out "seasonal" stuff to pull out when the time is right.

Like me from the Monday locker.  Normally 98% of the stuff animals I find either hit the trash pile or the Goodwill pile.  However, with Easter coming up I pulled out all of the nice looking large rabbits to sell at the flea.

Things that go straight to the dump:
2005 or older TVS
Matress / Boxspring
Pillows

Well we have some pretty loud talking regulars.  They are a couple of old retired guys.  Friendly enough and great to hang with.  They do tell the newbies up front that they have been doing this for XX years (for most 15 - 25).  If this was a easy way to get rich then what are they still doing here????

We poke fun at the shows alot also.  Other then Monday for the most part the crowds have grown but it's 80% regular bidders with a few noobs bidding.  With those people we pretty much waste their money at the start of a caravan or multi-unit location so by time we get to the end they have blown their wad.

Next week is 3 of the regular few locker locations that I sometimes make and other times don't.  I'll be curious to see how those crowds are.  We are talking only 2-5 lockers a day at a location.

Case in point from Monday.  The 10am auction had 20-30 people for 3 units.  Most of the non-regulars just followed the crowd since the paper said Metro was at 9:30 when it was really at 12.  An hour later back at Metro the crowd was already 60 strong and growing.  Auctionzip is not your friend :(

Well I've switched up some and decided to try for some local gov surplus auctions in my area.  Just put in a $30 bid on the following 10 bikes.  If don't win for the $30 not bidding any higher.  Just tossing a "feeler" out to see if can get something cheap.  Even needing repair can get both parts, scrap, and good about 3-5 good bikes out of that lot.

You are bidding on an assortment of bicycles in various conditions (from poor to fair condition)with 1- 26" NEXT, 1-Huffy-Sea Star (20"), 1-20" Ambush (gold), 1-Giant, Yukon 26", 1-Nemesis 20", 1- 26" Roadmaster, 1- 24" Ozone, 1-Huffy 26", 1-26" Giant Simple Cruiser, and 1-26" Schwinn-Meridian. All bikes are in need of repairs and some may only be good for parts. The winning bidder gets all bikes. We do not know the working condition of these bikes so they are sold as is and where is. Bidders are encouraged to inspect this lot.

Wish was up in Atlanta - see a few good auctions up there.  $12 for 3 good size AV carts.  Those do well for showing off items at the flea and vendors love them to move things in and out of their shop for display.
