Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: Gearing up...
« on: November 10, 2014, 03:55:47 PM »
In NY our numbers go up in the winter.  More contractors, landscapers ..etc. that are shut down due to the weather come out.

my issue as a seller is that its an indefinite 3 minute extension.  If I am posting multiple auctions and they all end within 10 minutes of each other I'm losing bidders to my second auction because they will be too busy hitting refresh to see if the extension has been activated.

My issue as a bidder is that a 3 minute extension is ridiculous.  If an auctioneer waited 3 minutes after the last bid to close it no one would show up to their auctions any more.

They will learn the lesson and switch back soon enough.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: Tips for buying storage units online
« on: October 25, 2014, 06:44:36 PM »
When buying a storage unit online, how do you select a good unit? Do you have any tips for for people who've never purchased a storage unit online?

Ive only gotten a couple but the rule is the same ... bid on what you see.... especially if you are doing any kind of travelling for the room.

Out of every unit you have bought that contained a safe, how many of them contained valuables and how many were empty or only contained personal documents? Small fire safes included.

My ratio is about 2 in every 10.

From all the rooms I've ever found gold in, currently up to about 5 lbs, never found one pennyweight in a safe.  I'm 0/50+

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Portable Storage Container Auctions
« on: October 18, 2014, 08:25:26 PM »
Has anyone been to a PODS, U-Box, 1-800-PACK-RAT or other portable storage container auctions? Have you noticed any difference in the procedures or quality of the merchandise? Any pros or cons to buying these units?

They were pretty bad the last couple of years due to Sandy.  Most people got them, threw all of their junk and wet stuff in there and when insurance stopped paying - because they settled the content claim - they just went up for auction.

My best pod was about 6 years ago.  Bought it for $2400 sold everything for $25000.  Haven't gotten a couple of doubles and triples since then but few and far between.

Also, for some reason more people show up to them in my area than a normal auction.

I think people think they are on container wars or something and its something different.  Its all the same stuff.

yah i think most people are embarrassed rather than angry that their stuff was sold off....it WAS their fault afterall. But yah i've never seen anyone come up drunk or mad or anything.

I know one guy in NYC bought a room in Harlem, about 5 years ago.  Paid for the room, unloaded the room into his truck and as he was getting into a guy about 6'5 put a gun in his gut told him to move over and drove the truck to his house where he had two buddies unload everything and then let the guy go.

Guy called the cops but no witnesses other than the guys friends which were nowhere to be found.

Another one I saw a guy and his prostitute girlfriend (evident for multiple reasons) came to an auction, no one ever saw them before but they stood out.  Once bidding started at one room the guy started loudly stating to the girl that if anyone bids against him on their room he would teach them a lesson.  Everyone now starts laughing and we get to his room.  He bids $10 and looks around like he will fight anyone that bids.  So of course the bids start coming from the back of the room 100, 200, 300 ..etc. he finally startings cursing, takes his shirt off and pulls out a gun from his sweats.  Grabs a random guy and starts hitting him with it.  Most people ran, cops came both were arrested.

Those were the two I've heard about and thats in about 10 years of doing it.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How do you get a title to a motorcycle?
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:00:10 PM »
I saw an online auction that included a motorcycle. I was just wondering how you go about getting a title without the consent or cooperation of the previous owner.

From the home page this question looks totally different

Online Storage Auctions / Weird facility rule
« on: October 12, 2014, 08:32:24 PM »
Check out the fine print of an online auction ....

Buyer is responsible for removing the entire contents of the unit within 72 hours of auction end. Buyer must present valid state or government issued photo ID at time of pick up. Buyers agrees to leave any personal items (birth certificates, passports, driver's license, photo album, financial documents, social security cards, etc. with site manager at time of removal. No dumpster on site. A lock is required to secure unit if you are unable to remove contents in one visit. Buyer must sign and agree to Pier 40 Self Storage On-line Public Auction sale rules before making payment and removing storage unit contents. Removal of items is only during our business hours Tuesday through Friday 7:30am to 6:00pm. Sale is not final until contents of unit are fully removed : Tenant in default can pay and claim their storage unit at anytime after unit is listed in auction to when the contents of the unit are present. Cash only!!

Apparently even if you pay them and start to load the units, if the owner pays they will get the rest of their stuff back?  What kind of craziness is this?

I am monitoring some online units and I see one that was just posted, has two weeks left and its already in the thousands.  The price is increasing while I'm looking at it.

I don't see the rationale behind bidding up a room when there is so much time left.

Ebay people like to watch the item and then sit back and see what happens.

Split topic

Big sis ... apparently she passed away.  Tried to find out what happened but no info out there.

Update: Before the cause of death was released, some people speculated that Robins death may have been drug related or suicide. Robin passed away from cancer.

I just started watching it ... so far I'm up to the fake grandfather clock that has a hidden m1 rifle in it .... what do you mean " over the top"?

They also drank water funny ... classic Allan and Ton

Just kidding the guy they are selling the gun to just negotiated against himself from $600 to $1000 and it blew something up so sold sold sold.

I'm not up to the authentic soviet space suit yet..  :41:

I haven't been able to stand that show for a couple of seasons now.....just to "over the top" for me.  I'm really surprised that it is still around.

Do the contents listed in the legal notice effect your decision to attend the auction? Why or why not?

yes and no.  The descriptions are usually what the tenant listed at the time of unit rental, not necessarily what is/will be in there at the time of the auction.

If its high end sounding stuff it will get me there but I still have to see the value to bid.

Anyone going to be watching the premiere this Saturday? I wonder why they moved the show to Saturday, the ratings must not be as good as they used to be.

Ratings had a huge drop off last season.  Their "pawn shop" and "Ton vs. Allan" angle didn't pan out.

Just like baggage battles they need to change it up.  Unless it becomes almost free to make this one is just about out of there.

The season finale of Storage Wars season 5 was September 30th, 2014. I never thought it would make it past season 3. So, do you think we'll see a season 6? 7 even?

Yes.  They have already started pre production of season 6.  The secondaries, NY and Texas look like goners.
