Stores / Re: Booth space versus full store - I bit the bullet
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:16:42 PM »
I've not found anything like that in my area.  I have toyed with the idea of opening a flea market store but keep talking myself out of it.  The stores at my local flea are 10' by 20' and run $190 a month.  However, that doesn't include a table.  Tables run $12 a day for a 10' by 10' space.  So far I just rent a table about every other weekend.  I figured it out and a 10' by 20' storage unit at most locations are 80 - 115 a month.  So if I was renting a unit and a table every day it would be just as cheap to do the store and put my own tables out in the space provided.  I'm just not interested in hitting the flea market every Sat & Sun nor do I rent space currently.

Do the math in your own area for those interested in expanding beyond the yard sale / flea market table.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 11.....November, 2011

Today saw cloudy skys, cold wind, cold temps, and back to a decent size crowd.  Instead of the 100 people we had saturday we only had maybe a dozen people.  Half of them were regulars.  This was a 2 facility auction, but could only hit the first facility before heading back to work.  Units were nothing great.

1st - $10 (me) - musical keyboard, box, small musical keyboard, original nintendo, few other odds/ends
2nd - $230 (regular) - small bedroom set (bed, dresser, night stand)
3rd - $5 (me) - empty backpack, 2 blankets, and a small dorm fridge.  If it don't work no big loss.
4th - $100 (regular) - a 10x10 with kids bed, lots of scattered cloths.  Guy opened with 100 but could of prob gotten it for $50
5th - no takers - was a chair, 2 baskets, and cloths, odd shoe, purse on the floor.  I may give them the $5 they want for the 2 baskets and just to see if anything was left behind.  Isn't much to really clean up - maybe a garbage bag full of cloths.

Trying to decide if want to skip the 2 auctions on wednesday to do a metal run or attend them.  Only a few units for sale so may not bother.  Next week is my big week.  3 facility caravan on the 5th and 7 facility caravan on the 8th.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Tracking Log
« on: November 29, 2011, 08:29:55 AM »
CK - everyone does a few different things.  Mostly you keep track of spent, sold, and if you want "kept value" for those items you keep for yourself / family.

Myself - I also try and keep a general tab of what sales I do at the flea and date.  Working to build a database so I can look for trends.  Since I'm still learning the market in my area it helps me find the best price point for sales vs profit.

Movieman - I wish I could of seen the look of surprise, shock, or outrage on your face before you tried to die laughing at the guy.

I'll answer questions many days for new people.  Specially since I still consider myself a newbie.  That is as far as I'll help them.  For most of the regulars / old newbies like myself I'll pitch in some labor if they need it.  Many times it's just each of us looking in a locker one or the other won as we are curious about X item or such.  Many times I'll sel items to other regulars for cheap.  They can make a profit from said items and I don't have to deal with them (furniture mostly).

It's ok to keep stuff for yourself or family.  I do it all the time and consider it my "wage" that I pay myself or family.  For me I have two different calculations on my spreadsheet.  One is the true money spent vs money made.  The other is the money spent vs (money made + item's value kept).  I write down the things I've kept, figure 50-75% value of retail unless it's brand new and go from there.

Hmm - sounds like a unit my wife would of loved to search.  Of course she is getting her masters in Forensic Science and reads books about the body farm and such.  Yes - she can be a little strange.

I see someone is a Ron White fan.

Nothing really strange or such for me.  Some nasty food left in container type stuff is it so far for me.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Research research research

The one thing I really like about doing this is finding those items that you think are only worth a little and turn to be worth more.  Purchased a large 20x40 unit Saturday that looked great from the door and turned out to be a $875 bust after getting in.  Did find a Harrington lever chain winch that I figured was worth a $100 or so.  Looked it up online and it sells new for $750 - $800+.  Wish I could sell it for that much but am trying to get $350-400 out of it.

Found a large ornate spoon in another locker that turned out to be solid silver.  At first I figured it was just plated.  But it passed the magnet test and polished right up.  Need to get it tested further but I really expect it to be mostly silver and worth more then the price of the unit.

I'd say 90% of us have a turn and burn policy.  Sale the items as fast as you can.  The reason being once you really get into this you can quickly run out of space.  Or have most of your money tied up in inventory and not cash.

I myself keep more things longer then I should I'm sure.  I try to squeeze every penny that I can out of a locker.  But, even I have to sometimes cut my losses and donate items, etc.

Glad, you took the time to turn in the personal items.  I know some people local that don't even do that.

You get use to it after awhile.  My kids love to help me dig in a unit so they can get first dibs on stuff.  Same with the wife.  You just need to get them involved in the buying and selling like I did.  Oldest daughter works her tail off at the flea so we have money to buy more units.  Is how they get to keep the game systems and games they want.

I got you beat on the $525 long johns.  I have $875 worth of sheet rock in filling holes in my driveway.  Is what happens when a great looking unit from the outside turns out to be mud upon closer inspection.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Estate Sales
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:25:36 AM »
I may have to take a weekend off and do the sales instead of selling myself.  Starting to miss the estate auctions I use to attend.  Last few I went to had way to high prices for mid-range stuff.  No room for profit and nothing I wanted for myself.

That is a nice score.

Then you work long hours to sort, research, clean, restore, and sell what you can so that you can go back for more.  Some people have stores and such.  Many of us like myself do it part-time and work out of the garage / house.  Others, do it full time and do booths at the flea or swap meets.  Or they do numerous yard sales.  It all just depends on your situation.

Before you buy your first locker you best know what you are going to do with the stuff.  Keep it, burn it, sell it, trash it, or whatever it may be.

Buying a unit is easy.

In case you don't do the search....and most questions have been answered more then a few times, the answer is simple -- you don't.

Most places will not sell a car / boat / titled item even if it's in the storage unit.  It's like booze - they are suppose to remove the items from the locker.  Items like handguns and such - the laws range.  In california if it can be seen then the facility / auctioneer is to remove it and turn it over to a registered dealer.  Then the new locker owner can do the paperwork, pay money, etc. to get the firearm.  In Georgia I'm not sure of if a firearm is open to view if they would remove it or not.  I do know you don't have to register any found firearms.

If the vehicle or such can be purchased as part of a unit, then you should be able to do a salvaged title as abandoned property.  It's the same processes that you do when you buy a vehicle at one of the repair shop auctions.  Or if you purchase property at auction and a vehicle is still on the property.

Most people just part out the motorcycles and such they find.  Not heard of anyone that has found a car/boat yet.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: what about hazardous materials?
« on: November 28, 2011, 07:23:27 AM »
Everything in the unit (good or bad) is now your problem.  Most places have a recycle center that will take old paint, and such.  Motor oil is easy to get rid of - just hit any autoparts store.

It's some of the industrial thinners and such that can be tricky.  Or at least they are since I just got 4 containers of this stuff.  Looks to be new so will try and sell first.  If not will be calling around to see what I need to do.  Stuff is very flammable.

For the lockers it all depends on the legal notice.  Some places post the full name, unit #, description of contents.  Others just the first initial and last name, or just the last name, or just the unit # and contents.  It greatly depends.

As for your info.  When you sign-in most people just use first name, city, and a phone #.  Some places require you to provide your drivers licenses at registration.  Others, just when you purchase a locker.  The facility is not suppose to give out your info.  If the previous owner does call the facility they are to take the person's name and number and pass it along to you.

I have had the facility call me only once out of 10 lockers.  Was a moot point as I had already turned back in a large box of personal items.  The lady had finally gotten ahold of the tenant and the tenant wanted to know if I had XX item.  Was a bible or something.  I was honest and told the facility manager it was already at the dump.  I still feel bad tossing bibles but I get 2-3 in every unit it seems and no one wants them.

I have read threads here on the boards where someone at the facility gave a phone # out to a old tenant.  Is why most of the regulars here I think use a google phone # so it's easy to change.  Myself I use a old cell phone # that I can deactivate at any time.  Had to keep the number for 6 more months when bought wife a new phone (was cheaper).  So I just put it to use.

Well today was our 3 facility (only did 2 today) silent auction.  I change my mind on them - I should of stayed home.  Could tell there was a storage wars marathon this week.  Was only about 6 of us regulars and the rest noobies.  A few I think were regulars from out of town but the majority of the 60+ people were new.  I had tons of people asking me questions and such.  Didn't stop me from spending lots of money on a unit I liked.  Starting to wish I had passed on it however.

The Lounge / Re: Glendon's Squandered Opportunity

That was a good post Matches and pretty much right on.  I've yet to read the book thread.  I had found his website about the time I found this one.  Spent 5 mins on his website, compared to checking and posting to this site as much as possible.  I'm one of those guys he is pissed about as I find storage auctions and such to be common sense.  What seperates the good, bad, and ugly is your experience, contacts, and work ethic.

Would I ever buy Gelndon's books - nope - specially after his comments and such here.  Would I buy a book from Drew - yep.  Drew has shown from what I can tell over the internet to be open and honest.  He takes the good and bad comments and has yet to remove them.  I don't pay for his Atlanta listings since I don't hunt those grounds but I have sent a few people the links to this board and his listing site that wanted to head to Atlanta.
