Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Now off for the midnight and black friday shopping.  See you in 12 hours or so.

Hmm - now why does this thread read to me like someone is pissed off or scared.  I've not really read the thread about your books / youtube video but I may have to now.  I did visit your site (if it's the one I'm thinking of) and left it after 30 mins to just read the threads here.  I highly doubt people have "stolen" your ideas and posted them as your own.  Most of everything I've read in these forums, other ones, and the few $.99 books I bought just to browse are all the same.  It's the same info in different formats.  Storage Auction's like many things is just common sense.  What makes the difference is experience.  That can only be gained with time.

I really agree with acman.  It's learning what sales, for what, and to whom that makes or break you.  What contacts you grow over time.  I'm only 10 units in but I do know more now then I did back in June.  I get better each month.

It was Square that I saw advertised for 9.99.  Guess my question is how do you get the signature or do you run it as a "no sig" or "online" type sale?  I myself would have them sign a seperate piece of paper w/ the amount and transaction #.  Use a receipt book for it.  Just something I was keeping in mind if I find higher priced items to take with me to the flea.  Or for yardsales come spring.

Ouch - those are some bad prices.  I have noticed the crowds also.  Still under what most of ya'll are seeing but they are up.  Heck, even yesterday at a canceled auction there was 3 of us, one a guy I've only seen once before.  The other was a lady and her father that buy crap units for high prices.  They have a store but I've heard it's total crap stuff.

I'll see what the crowd is like Saturday at the silent auction.  I really don't like silent auctions but seem to be doing better in price / profit vs normal bidding.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: My second unit.

Yep - you may of burned all your luck on that first unit.  However, sounds like you will do well on the second unit.  Prices do seem cheap in your area even compared to mine.  I thought I had some of the lower prices.

Out of 10 units - 1 should do well.  Anywhere from 6-8 will break even / make a little profit, with the others being mistakes on the gamble.  Some people can pretty much break even on every unit and then really rake it in on a good unit.  Just takes time to gain experience, contacts, etc.  You never stop learning.

Was looking at the black friday ads and saw the credit card reader plugin & app for sale for 9.99.  Has anyone ever thought about accepting CCs at a yard sale or flea market to increase sales?  Even with the % the company takes for themselves would it be worth it?

I'm gun shy about something like this.  Just to afraid people would buy the items and then dispute the charge later.  Even with signatures and maybe a picture of the transaction I would think it's more trouble then worth.

thoughts?

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Ebay vs. Flea Market
« on: November 22, 2011, 07:45:44 PM »
Ebay I hate for the fees and such but love for the vast # of people on there.  So if can find something unique or high priced it goes on ebay.  The flea I'm still learning the ropes of.  I'm one of those $70-80 after expense people.  I don't make a killing but still find it profitable as my oldest daughter goes with me and does most of the selling.  Now my youngest daughter wants to go and help.  Time I spend with both daughters is more precious to me then the cash.  I'm teaching them negotiations, sales, and buying.  So it's all a plus to me.

Sellers in my area are having mix results.  My low profit is mostly due to my low prices imo.

Hmm - I don't really have one that I can think of off the top of my head.  Closest thing would be the 1/10 oz gold panda coin I purchased in a lot of world coins years ago.  Paid like $60 for the whole lot and that one coin is worth about $177 at current spot price.

I have gotten some new ideas from the guy next to me at the flea market.  He takes old pictures, newspaper clips, etc. and puts them in a frame with some other items.  To me it's all junk - but his junk sales.  So keeping my eye out for old magazines and such that many of us may just toss that could be worth some money combined with other things.

Even if wanted to be lazy I'd yank or cut the power cords at the least and put them in my stockpile.  The rest I may of done like MovieMan if the yard here would of taken them.  They don't so I'd be pulling everything out like you are.

Auction wise this week has been a miss.  The one auction yesterday and the POD auction today have both been cancels.  If the silent auction saturday is like last month 90% of the people will pay up and 3 of the 4 units that do come up will suck.  Here is to hoping everyone goes out of town this weekend and/or spend all their money and don't think about storage lockers.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Preferential Treatment

FL sales tax is screwy but at least they don't pay income tax.  So best bet is when you live on the state line.  You work in FL and then shop in say GA for lower sales tax.  I do that with gas since SC is normally 5-12 cents cheaper per gallon.

I'm still thankful I've yet to pay a 10% buyers premium.  I just stay clear of those auctions, what few are around here.

The Treasure Chest / Re: My first unit(s)

Man that is just nuts.  $180+ bucks for a cup.  Doubt I'll find anything like that in the lockers around here.  Did find what I thought was cool - a Waffle House 2000 shirt - looks brand new in red.

As for ebay - I really don't like ebay and had stopped selling there for years.  But, for some of these cloths that just don't sell in my area I'll give them a try.  I'll use up my 50 free listings and once those are out I'm done for a month.  So far I've not come even close to useing 1/2 the listings.  As for mailing - I use USPS priority mail so all I supply is the tape on the boxes.  I still had a ton of boxes and such from when I did NASCAR / Coke bottle collectibles 4-5 years ago and did shippments every day.  It's like the two ties I put up last night.  See them going for $15-20 so I put them up at $5.  Was trying to sell them at the flea for $1 w/ zero interest.  So even w/ fees if they sale I'll make more money.  Pay the postage online - pack it up - and drop it in with all the mail from my work so no extra travel.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Going to my first auction tomorrow

Sounds like you had a good day and found a great place.  That is about the normal number of people here for non-advertised auctions in my area.  Though the crowds have grown again I expect them to drop off in Jan/Feb.

Most people I talked to last Sat/Sun was going to come out Dec 3rd and not this weekend.  Dec 2 most people get paid.

Well I just got my first two knock-offs.  Found two Dooney & Bourke purses that I got excited about when checked ebay.  Upon looking at a few listings I noticed the purses are made in the USA.  Mine are made in Korea.  Neither of them have a serial # in them either.  Oh well - I'll try to sell them at the flea and tell people up front they are knock offs.  Some ladies will not care.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?

Ya money - doing the $1 increment thing is what I had already thought about.  I see most of the movies and stuff going for $4 an up at other tables.  So I figure in box/case is $3.

I'm surprised the gloves sale.  I'm in GA - it don't get that cold here except for a few days in Jan/Feb.  I've found 4 pair and have sold all 4 pair.

The kids love the Buddah - so they are glad it's yet to sale.  I just have to find him again.  I hid him from the kids and now I can't find him (lol).

I have a cloths rack from Walmart (bought a ton of equipment from an auction they do...wish could re-find that site).  So I can hang the cloths up on 2 or 3 sides.  Going to take some more jackets, Disney shirts, and few other long sleeve stuff on Dec 3.  The lady next to me sales jeans and has a ton of them.  I see many people looking but only a few buys.

Working to post my ties and such on ebay.  See if can sell them that way.
