Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:24:55 PM »
Nope - not in the black yet but I keep inching toward it.  If I counted everything that has been kept by the family I'd be in the black.  After yesterday I'm back at the same level that I was before buying the latest two lockers.  If some of the bigger ticket items would sale on craigslist I'd be doing well.  Going to try and work on the cloths to post on ebay this week.

Most of my inventory is in furniture and cloths currently which is slow to move in my area.  Sold about 1/2 of my Christmas stuff already.  Just about all my games, movies, and cds have sold.  I may have to raise my prices on them as they just go to fast in a way.  Tells me I'm screwing myself.

So far my top items that move quick have been:

1) matchbox cars (.50 each)
2) CDs / DVDs - $1 w/o case
3) Games / CDs / DVDs - w/ case $2
4) Kitchen stuff (pans, new stove covers, etc.)
5) My $.25 bucket  (1st day this didn't move, now I do about 1/2 the tote each day sold).
6) Gloves -- I can't keep a pair of gloves, they always sale.  Mostly $1 - $5
7) Shoes still in box -- don't matter if the shoes are used if they are in the box they sale faster.

The other stuff that I have sold has been 1 time items like 1:24 scale Dale Jr car from 2004, the coke bank/clock, etc.

Stuff that get alot of interest but has not sold:

1) Jackets - have new leather and a nice red mid-length ladies jacket
2) Blue Lightning Buddah - he draws tons of attention but no one wants him for $20.  Is ok as it helps draw people in to spot just so they can touch the neon ball.
3) Jewelry - sold most of the costume jewelry I had.  Down to a gold plated ring (new w/ $79.95 tag on it) and a few pairs of ear rings still in package.  If I was dishonest I could of sold the gold plate ring about 4 times over now.  But that just isn't me.
4) Coins - sold a bunch of world coins the first day but none have moved since.  Just need the right grandmother or such to come along.  Easy to display and such.  Only really worth $.25 or less and I sale them for $.50 - $3 a coin depending on age and type.

Items that have not sold or gotten much interest:

1) Books - even kids disney books.  May have to display better.
2) Cloths - most people seem to pass them up and only look at the jackets.
3) Furniture - only my drop-leaf even gets looked or asked about and no takers at $50.

Things going to take next time (Sat 3rd)

1) Coins, CCG card (Magic, Warcraft, Pokemon)  <-- stuff from my own collection as filler
2) Rest of my Christmas Stuff
3) Jackets and few choice cloths (Disney shirts, etc.)
4) Pig collection (bank, statues, etc.)
5) Coke bottle collection (cups/glasses, various coke bottles unopened)
6) All my new / boxed items (toaster oven, glasses, etc.)
7) May take some sports cards but am doubtfull.

The Treasure Chest / Re: My first unit(s)

I may be doing it backwards but I mostly turn and burn, then do research.  If it's a slow day or I think something looks more promising then others I'll do a quick search.  I'm learning that I need a ton more knowledge on general stuff then I currently have.  I currently only average 2 units a month.  So I try to take time to look-up some things to see if they are worth ebay or just selling at the flea.  Example was a coke bank/clock that I found still in box.  Found one on ebay for 19.99 and $15 shipping.  So it at the flea for $15.  May of gotten $20 out of it but I pretty much knew I'd get $15 and it would make room in my totes for new lockers.

I started to take pictures of many things as I uncover them.  That way I can do research later that night or in spare time when not doing anything else.  I try to squeeze every cent out of a unit that I can.

As for coffee mugs - so far I'm lucky.  Only have about 3 or 4.  I figure if can't sale them at the flea they will go to Goodwill or will be used for target practice.

Ouch - I'm glad my flea is closer then yours sounds.  Of course I may one day need to venture out further.  Guy that was setup next to me yesterday was talking about 2 other flea markets in SC.  He bounces back and forth between the three it seems.

The more I go to the flea the more info I'm gleeming from people.  Found out yesterday that forks sale like mad out there.  Lady had a ton of spoons and knives but said she can't keep forks.  I know the pots I had went pretty quick.  I had figured mostly they were priced to low but who knows.

I much prefer non auctionzip sales.  One the crowd is normally smaller.  Two - I don't pay a 10% buyers premium.

Take your lock(s), flashlight, and bid smart if you bid at all.

I've not watched the show but I may have to one day.

It's funny what you said about estate sales Cobia.  I moved over to storage auctions as my results at estate sales had declined greatly.  Things that use to go for a few bucks or 100 was going for 2-3x that.  Of course this was all before the downturn in the economy.  Not been to an estate auction in almost 2 years now.  Equipment auction was just as bad last summer.

One side note - while there is a ton of knowledge at your fingertips now a days there are still many lazy people.  So there are still some good find out.  I think there is just much more competetion in everything now a days.  Everyone is trying to make a little extra money.  It's like the soda/beer cans on the side of the road.  Use to I would see the old homeless (he isn't homeless) looking guy picking up cans.  Now I see him and 3-4 others every week.  Even saw a guy w/ a golf cart and trailer driving down the road picking up everything of metal.

I thought he was talking about Brandi also.  Then again I don't watch storage hunters so have no idea who ya'll are talking about.  SW is about all I can stomach anymore.  I don't even bother to watch Auction Hunters it was so fake.

Don't ever just toss cloths aside out of hand.  You are going to get a ton of cloths.  I'm already sitting on 2 3' square boxes of cloths, plus about a dozen bags, a cloths basket, and few other odd size boxes of clothing.  I've only sold 1 faded glory long sleeve shirt for $1.  The stained, ripped, junk cloths go to a lady that uses the buttons, zippers and such.  Everything else is still waiting to be processed.  However, this is my plan (not had time to do it all yet)

1) Take to flea few times
2) Pull out all jeans & list as lot or individual on ebay.
3) Pull out name brand shirts for ebay.
4) After all else fails I'll goodwill it for the tax break.

As I said in another thread - make sure to do your research.  I had a box of ties for $1 each.  Never sold any so started to list on ebay when found out some ties individual are selling for $15+.

Shoes are the same thing.  Daughter today pulled out a pair of high heel sandles as ebay has them for 30+.  Even if you sale for 1/2 that it's more then the flea.  With 50 free listings it doesn't hurt to try a few each month.

Well I do say "you never know" a few times each month.  With me it's not thinking I'm going to find the next gold bar in a unit but for what will this unit hold in addition to what I see.  I'm getting better in figurining it out just based on expierence.  Prices still amaze me sometimes.  My latest unit from a silent auction I won on $26 and has paid for itself and made me 3x the profit so far.  Thus I remarked the other day that sometimes you just never know.  These type units I've already classified as the bread and butter units.  Units with no really wow factor but that have solid items that sale well.

Didn't get to go to the flea saturday as I thought it was going to be really cold and cloudy with today was suppose to be sunny and in the low 70s.  Dang the weather people get it all wrong.  Yesterday, was mostly sunny and in the 60s but felt really nice outside.  Today it was cloudy and the 10% chance of rain turned out to be rain all day and never got close to 70.  So I was pretty bummed this morning when headed out for the flea.  First my stuff gets wet, then stops raining, and then starts again after I get setup.

Surprise surprise I still did well with a light crowd.  Still managed to make 71.50 after expenses.  90% of what I sold today came from the $26 unit I purchased last week.  It's been my most profitable unit so far, over $90 in profit with a brand new leather jacket, furniture, and more new items to sale.  Really hope can find another unit like this.  Nothing of a wow factor but a solid unit.

$120 for that - oh man you lucked out.  I'd of loved a unit like that.  Of course I'm in to smalls and such.  Figure around here that 10x30 would go for 200-300 easy.  Good hunting to you.

Well normally you would package everything up, get the weight and dimensions of the box and then you can check postage by going to usps.gov website.  Think you can do the same with fedex and ups.

Trying to ship the ship would be a pita.

Fayettenam Man - I'd of bought the unit for $1 also.  Of course I'd scrap the monitors myself if they didn't work.  If they did work would try a few to sell and then scrap the others if need.

Went to an auction at lunch.  Guy was up front and said one unit was full of tires and the other two were only so/so.  He wasn't kidding either.  Was a silent auction.  I saw I got outbid on my token bid and took off.  Don't know what winning bids was.

For only 3 units the crowd was still little heavy.  Saw 5 or 6 regulars and about the same number of new people I didn't know.  Wondering if many of them have lockers there and come out when they see the sign in the office.  Just don't see these people from auction to auction.  Either that or they tap out first time out.

Well last minute decision to do a run to an area we have not been too. Could not make the first two facilities but hit the last two. about 30 people all more professional compared to Lookey Loos..
5X5 Dryer kids toy 1/2 packed. $250
5X5 roll of bubble wrap, hard hat, vinyl floor backing.  a lot of totes $170
5X10 Furniture, sofa, love seat, mattress, bed frame, dinning room table. Not high end maybe ten boxes
$300.00
5X10 a lot of boxes looked like clothes. 1/2 full clean looking. $170.00.

Better than our immediate area. but still a little High IMO.

On the hunt next week. have to get the final touches for the Flea this weekend.

Those are about average prices for my area.  I'd of purchased both of the $170 units.  I'm a sucker for totes / boxes to search in.  Hate furniture - even if that is where the money is.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Seed money

As others said that may not get you much.  It all depends on your area and the auction scene.  I myself started with $400.  Today I only have a little over $300 -with $1500 in reserve.  The reserve is father's money just in case I stumble upon another great tool locker like did few weeks ago.

You may be able to get 1 or a few lockers with your money.  Just to give you an idea of my purchases they have been:

175 <-- 5x5 w/ guitar purchased for x-mas gift
180 <-- only furniture 10x10 w/ lockbox
35 <-- 1/4 full 10x10 -- decent unit profit
235 <-- 10x10 - furniture unit (big mistake)
27 <-- silent auction
101 <-- silent auction
0 <-- cleaned out locker for company to get metal shelving, earn goodwill
70  <-- was 5 bidders that day
80  <-- small 5x5 w/ fishing & golf bag (pics in a thread)
26  <-- silent auction, best locker yet

So you can buy a locker or two depending.  However, I'm not making tons of money and just mostly breaking even since I don't deal in furniture.  Furniture is where much of the money can be made unless you get some lucky finds w/ jewelry, coins, and such.

Best advice is to start slow.

It all depends on how often they hold auctions.  I've seen 50+ units listed for auction at a caravan and then only have 30 some odd number out of 7 locations.  Just recently we did 27 units in one location just due to the fact they hadn't done an auction before (new facility) and only 3 people paid up.

If NJ stats hold the same as down here where I'm at a good 50-75% of those units will pay up and be pulled.  Like today I'm going to an auction that had 12 units in the paper.  Just called and he has 6 -- but calling on 3 more.  So we will prob end up with 3-4 units up for auction.
