Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: My first bids!
« on: August 27, 2011, 06:58:08 PM »
Saturday auctions normally have a ton more noobs then weekday.  However, those prices seem about norm right now.  I know I've bid on 2 seperate auctions now and not come away with anything.  You just have to set your max and know when to walk away.

That is a nice locker.  Wish I had those ammo cans and nails.  Gratz.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Jackpot ! Jackpot in the Safe ?

I would keep it if I had that locker.  I'm always needing more room in my safes.  Currently don't have one that will fit my rifles and such.  If you could get more info on the safe as far as fire rating and stuff that could help you make decision.  I have 2 floor safes and 2 lock-box type safes.  The floor safes for my coins and weapons I don't keep on hand.  The fire box type safes for important documents, etc. that I can grab and go as need.

I would also sandblast the safe and re-paint it.

In my area people use craigslist and the radio station.  Local station puts up all the yard sales on their website and advertises that section of the site for free.  They do this on all of there stations so you hit country, rock, pop, etc.  About 8 different channels.

The paper may even do it for free.  I'd have to check.

Well my first auciton I attended on a saturday had 100+ people there.  Even 60+ registered bidders.  Took forever to get a look at the locker as people wouldn't line up, etc.  Finally the owner threatened to not open anything else till people formed a line.

I'd say 50% of the people were there due to the big neon sign they had out by the road saying auction at 10am on that saturday.  Most people didn't have a clue how, what, or anything.  Me being the noob and I still answered questions for people that had no clue.

Only 9 people including me actually bid on anything.  Everyone else just took up space.

I loved the last one I just watched on the site.  Think it's the newest.   They find a bong and the whole unit is a bust.  Yet, the other unit they purchased has a ton of paintings, posters, and the 1890 knuckle duster.   That item was so far out of place for the rest of that unit I had to laugh.

A nice teacher - sounds like a good locker.  I'd end up keeping most of the tools but that is one of the things I'm looking for personally.

very nice haul you had there.  Did you include your 2 days at the flea market in your hourly total?  As for the hour rate - 90% of my company would love to make that much per hour.  Even the temps who don't get paid benefits so they make more per hour then others.

Thanks for the details.  The gamble on those trash lockers was worth it.  I've been kicking myself for not picking up a few lockers on Monday since had till Sunday to clean them out.  One of the trash lockers went for $5 but I saw at least $50 in stuff up front.  Just wasn't sure of dump fees.  Still getting a feeling for those.

Thanks again parnisha - good luck in further auctions.

Gratz man - not seen a locker like yours yet.  Seen a few family packed lockers with all the furniture, fridge, wash & dryer, etc. and they go for $500+ here.  That unit would of gone over 500 easy if some of the local regulars were there and/or Mr. Church deep pockets as I call one guy.

Please keep us informed on what else you find and how well you do.

Garage Sales / Re: do you tag items at your garage sale?
« on: August 24, 2011, 01:29:20 PM »
Lol CopiaVita - I just said the same type thing about haggeling in a different thread.  Of course I normally will try to get something cheaper at a garage sale or flea market.  Is just in my blood even if I'm 100% American.

The few times I've done a sale in the past, be it either yard sale or flea market I normally use both strats.  I have my large or expensive items market with a tag or dot.  My shelves with paperback books and such I just have a sign on the end saying $.50 a book or 5 for $2.  Cloths, bulk items, etc. all go on a table.  I never tag everything I had for sale.  Just some things.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Amazon Rant

Ouch - that really has to suck.  I know years ago when I was looking to sale some collectable items I looked at them.  At the time ebay was a way better deal.  Sounds like that is still the case.

Flea Markets / Re: flea market noob
« on: August 24, 2011, 01:16:50 PM »
Do a little recon first.  Does your local flea market already have 4-5 people selling the same type stuff as what you have.  If so you will have to price under them to have a chance of a sale.

Also, if there are more then one flea market check out the crowds at both locations.  What is the price to setup?  Can you get a spot with alot of foot traffic or are you regulated to the back wall.

People that hit flea markets are also looking for good deals.  Americans don't really barter or negotiate price as much as the rest of the world.  That said, give yourself some wiggle room.  So that you can offer the item cheaper after some haggeling and still come out happy.

One thing I did notice the other day at my local flea market.  More and more middle and upper-middle class are going to them for items.  As the economy gets worse and purse strings get tighter people re-think second-hand items.  Where before they wouldn't think twice about spending a grand for a new couch, they now hit the other stores to only pay $250-$500 for the same couch.

I've gotten to know one of the regulars well already due to seeing him at estate auctions and common friends in the dirt track racing.  The so called whale is the one that purchased 2 units at $550 each.  He is mostly looking for whole household, lots of furniture units.  His thrift store is a church owned property.  I suspect he has it setup so everything funnels to the church and then back to him.  A lady I use to work with did that.  Her husband was the preacher.  At a job paying about $8 an hour they seemed very well off.  Nice house, two brand new upper end cars every 2-3 years, etc.  He would even bring her a dozen roses every few days for the office.

Anyways - for now I think the units he is interested in are not the same as the ones I am.  My competetion is the 3-4 regulars that are also looking for smalls and such for the flea market.  Three of them have stalls at one of the two markets we have in the area.  Once I get a better feel for things I'll not be as gun shy as I am now.  Least I wasn't the only one going sheesh at a few of the unit prices.  A few of us was thinking $200, etc. on some of the units that went for 300 and 400+.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: A few noobie questions...
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:01:38 PM »
Best thing is to call the storage company.  Should be a sign of who to call if you want to rent a unit.  Call them and ask about the auction, deposit, etc.  Depending on the site they may use a auctioneer or they may do it themselves.
