New to Storage Auctions? / Re: storage auction pay listings
« on: December 06, 2011, 06:49:17 PM »
Also, the answer to your question(s) can be found via the search button.  You don't need to "pay" to find all the listings in your area.  You just have to do a little work.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:32:04 AM »
I use my droid more then my ipad for research and stuff at auctions.  Only drawback is the smaller screen vs the ipad.

Watch your network useage.  Netflix can eat up some bandwidth quickly if you watch movies over the 3G instead of wi-fi.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Junk or 'gems'? Which do you prefer?
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:28:52 AM »
Well like Movieman I'll take both....as long as it's small.  I try to stay away from furniture as I don't have a good outlet to sell it.  Hopefully today I'll sell a drop leaf table I got back in July.

Anyways - depending on where you are selling you can make money on both types of items.  I do very well at the flea with stuff under $5.  Other unique items take longer to sell but can fetch a higher price.

For me it all depends on how much storage space I have and how long I want to hold onto an item.  I may end up donating all my furniture before the 1st for the tax write-off since it's not anything high-end.  Is mostly odds and ends and pretty well beat up.  Good kids furniture in other words.

I prefer games / dvds / cds as they sale pretty easy.  Jewelry is always good - even costume.  Unopened items are so/so depending what they are.  Forks and such from any high-end retail or even places like JC Penny and Macy's can do well at the flea so I look for "kitchen" type stuff.

I try to call the night before right at 5:30 to see how many paid.  Many of the places around here cut the locks after 5:30 the day before the auction.

You just never know also.  Had one facility cancel the entire auction the morning of the sale.  People start to show up at 9 and a sign on the door says auction canceled.  Wasn't the people paid up, it was HQ canceling the auction or something I later found out.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 12.....December, 2011
« on: December 05, 2011, 07:46:29 PM »
Well today was a complete bust.  Normally we have around 20 people at this auction.  Today we had over 50.  I think the majority of them were looky loo's.  We did have a few new faces that either are regulars somewhere else or have more cash then sense.  They came with trailers and everything.  Prices were all over the board but to me inflated.  Two of the units I liked and bid on went 3x my max.  These are units I could of gotten for under $50 last month.

One of the ladies I know is new.  Was told by one of the regulars that she purchased her first unit last week.  She gave a table and chairs away for like $30.  She just got very luck to find a nice gold necklace and other jewelry in this unit.  So she was back out today and bidding like crazy.  I know it's bad when the preacher that has some deep pockets and buys lots of units walked away from a unit after she bid $400.  Was a 5x10 with washer/dryer, fridge, few boxes, and some 2 foot wide by like a foot deep cabinet with a glass front.  Not a $400 unit to me.  Think she got it for like $450.  I'd say a good 80% of the units went to people I've not seen before.

This has me re-thinking the thursday auction as I burn a vacation day to attend this caravan.  May just call them and see how many units they are down to.  If it's going to be another 60-100+ people there just not worth the time / effort.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: weekend auctions?
« on: December 05, 2011, 11:54:43 AM »
Weekend auctions are ok other then the crowds.  Where during the week you can do 5 lockers or so in 30 -45 mins - it will take you twice that or longer due to all the looky loos.  I've purchased 3 units on the saturday auction that goes on once a month.  Of course it was silent.  Starting in January they are going to a live format - so we will see what happens then.

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: W-S, NC

Welcome to the boards WARedBear.  Hope you and your wife have fun doing auctions.  One word of advice -- if you have a full time job don't quit it to do this.  You would just be shooting yourself in the foot so to speak.

I also am lucky enough to have a full-time job and do storage auctions on the side.  I just hit the auctions that I can and miss the rest.  Do take 1 day every month off just to hit a 7 facility caravan auction.

Good luck and good hunting to you.

The Lounge / Re: CQ, CQ, calling all ham radio operators !
« on: December 05, 2011, 10:41:10 AM »
Lol Movieman - I was like "I didn't know Movieman was a ham".  I just got my license in July and working to study for my general.

I'm always looking for HAM equipment in a locker and such.  No such luck for me so far.  Mostly need a good antenna and such.  However, if you have the specs, picture, and such feel free to send me a message or I can message you my email.  My father may be interested in the radio.  Him and my uncle use a ton of different equipment.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: look at all the texas trash.
« on: December 05, 2011, 09:01:58 AM »
Lol - I always get in frendly arguments with people from Texas when I visit the state.  We compare the heat in Texas vs heat in GA.  Is always a load of fun when I visit the state.

I'm waiting to see what the show looks like Tuesday to decide.  But since it is a reality show - of course they are going to pick the dregs or so of the state.  It's like the people they show on the News after a disaster or such.  You always get "Bubbah" or some other hillbilly looking redneck or the black version of the same on TV.  You don't get the more normal people with all their teeth, at least a high school education, and such that make up 99% of the population of the area the crews are filming at.  Nope - they go for that 1% that make good entertainment.

He isn't talking about dealer auto auctions or car auctions by repair shops and such.  These are vehicles and things found in storage units.  I did find out in my area that they can sell the vehicle and such in the unit.  In fact a car + engine is going up for auction this week unless the person pays up.  For myself I'd have to get a salvaged title to sell it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Search Storage Auction on Cl
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:35:19 PM »
I saw one of the saturday auctions advertised on CL.  Was the same one that had a big neon sign out front with the date/time of auction.  I didn't bother to make the hour drive to that auction.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:30:22 PM »
E-scrap can be worth money if you have lots of it.  In small numbers it's just about pointless.  In large lots you can sale it to a e-scrap yard or even online via e-bay and such.  I do this with all the computers and such I get that are crap.  The more weight you have in RAM, cards, CPUs, and the like the better.  Plus most computer stuff has some massive alum heat sinks that add up quick in weight.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: weekend auctions?
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:10:31 PM »
You really don't want to hit weekend auctions.  They are normally 2-3X the number of people there.  In my area there is only 1 facility that does a saturday auction once a month.  Not holding any in december.  Everyone else is M-F and normally between 9 - 11 start times.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?
« on: December 04, 2011, 08:04:30 AM »
I sold one xmas book for $.50.  At 10 for a buck I'd just give them to Goodwill and write them off as $1 a book.  Beanie babies I've given a few away to kids after the parents spent 10-20 bucks with me.  Trying to build some goodwill so they look for me every week.

Other then the "tax" question I don't see why you couldn't sell them.  Specially if they were already purchased by someone and you just found their stash.  For the longest time I knew people who would goto NC to buy cases of smokes and bring them back to GA to re-sell.  Others would be posted on ebay.  At the local flea there is a guy that sells boxes of all types of cigarettes.
